After the monumental success of the 2023 film Barbie, rumours about a sequel have been flying. The film, directed by Greta Gerwig, made US$1.45B at the worldwide box office, so it stands to reason that Warner Bros. will want to bank on Mattel’s most celebrated intellectual property for as long as they can.
Good news then, for fans who want Barbie 2 to happen. According to The Hollywood Reporter (THR), Greta and her partner, Noah Baumbach, have brought an idea for the next Barbie film to Warner Bros. The duo are allegedly in talks with the distributors to make the sequel happen, though conversations are still “in the early stages”, reports THR.
Greta and Noah are partners in work and in life. While Gerwig directed Barbie, Noah produced the film, and both wrote the film’s Oscar-nominated screenplay.
Interestingly, the couple’s representative has pushed back on the Barbie 2 rumours, stating that THR’s report has no legitimacy.
Still, there’s no smoke without fire. Given how much traction Barbie received last year, Warner Bros will probably never say never to a sequel.
