5. Impetigore (2019)

For most of us, inheriting property is a huge W, but not for the leading lady in Indonesian horror, Impetigore. There, a woman inherits a house in her ancestral village, but she is unaware that members of the community have been trying to locate and kill her to remove the curse that has plagued them for years. Expect scares that nod to Indonesian folklore, and to not sleep for a few nights.

6. A Tale Of Two Sisters (2003)

The South Korean horror film follows two sisters who grapple with their traumatic past in their sinister family home. 7. Incantation (2022)

Found footage horror films are making a bit of a comeback, with Incantation falling right in step with that revival. This Taiwanese horror film draws on folk rituals and the darker aspects of  Buddhist mythology, hitting close to home. Shadowy faces start appearing in the photographs he takes, which leads to Thun and his past unravelling. A lot of the spine-tingling scares, including the trope of a ghost sitting on one’s shoulders, reach their peak with Shutter. 

9. Roh (2019)

For fans of horror films that layer dark prophecies, curses, and rural settings, stream Malaysian folk horror film Roh. The story follows a single mother living in isolation with her two children in a jungle. Their lives take a dark turn when the children bring home a mysterious girl covered in clay, who warns them of impending doom. Psychological tension blends with local folklore to create an eerie film that gets under your skin, even if the film isn’t the most coherent at points.

10. The Wailing (206)

The local police officer, Jong-goo, investigates these bizarre occurrences, which are rumoured to be linked to a Japanese stranger living in isolation in the mountains. As the investigation continues, the story gets darker and more complex. To date, The Wailing is hailed as one of South Korea’s best horror films.
