Were you a fan of the Freaky Friday movie back in 2003? If you were, you would probably have already seen that 22 years later, they have announced a sequel to the beloved movie. Production for the sequel, Freakier Friday, has already wrapped, and the first trailer has been released.
If you’re looking forward to Freakier Friday as much as we are, here are 5 fun facts about the sequel that will get you even more excited to watch it.
Besides Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis coming back as mother-daughter duo Anna and Tess Coleman, most, if not all, of the original cast members will be coming back for round 2. Disney has confirmed that Chad Michael Murray, Mark Harmon, and many others will be reprising their original roles from the original 2003 film.
Haley Hudson and Christina Vidal, who played Anna’s bandmates Peg and Maddie, respectively, will also be coming back. This means that their band, Pink Slip, will be making an appearance once again! Lindsay has revealed on Jimmy Fallon’s The Tonight Show that she’s been taking guitar lessons to prepare, so we are looking forward to hearing them play again.
Though Lindsay has been back in the acting scene for a couple of years, with her most recent appearance in the Netflix film A Secret Wish, her role as Anna in Freakier Friday will be her first role that will be theatrically released in 18 years.
The last time she played a leading role that was theatrically released was in 2007, for the film I Know Who Killed Me, where she played Aubrey Fleming.
In the original Freaky Friday film, Tess and Anna swap bodies, which was already pretty freaky to begin with. This time, the chaos increases with a 4-way body swap. Just like the name of the sequel, these swaps are definitely freakier than the last.
They will involve Tess and Anna, as well as Harper, Anna’s daughter and Lily, Anna’s soon-to-be stepdaughter, who will be played by Julia Butters and Sophia Hammons, respectively. Harper and Anna will swap bodies, which pays homage to the OG film, but the swap we are most excited to see play out is between Lily and Tess, since they probably haven’t established much of an emotional connection yet.
Mark Waters, the OG director, will be passing the torch to Canadian director Nisha Ganatra to direct the sequel. She’s best known for her work on the movie Late Night, starring Mindy Kaling and Emma Thompson, as well as TV shows Brooklyn Nine-Nine and And Just Like That.
Though it’s a little sad that we won’t get to see the sequel directed by Mark, we’re looking forward to Nisha’s direction.
There’s finally an official release date for this long-awaited sequel! Freakier Friday will hit theatres in Singapore on 7 August 2025, which is a day earlier than the US. Be sure to clear your calendar that day so that you can catch this movie on release day.
There are only a few more months left before we can see Tess and Anna back on our screens, and we absolutely can’t wait. Time to start a countdown to the release date.
