Sanrio fans will no doubt be familiar with EVA Air’s Hello Kitty flight. Special planes are decked out in livery consisting of Hello Kitty and her pals. Inside the plane, Sanrio characters also adorn the amenities, from the headrest covers to the napkins.
During the pandemic, the customised planes have been used to transport essential goods around the world. Like the rest of us, Sanrio characters have to do their part to fight the virus too. However, EVA Air recently announced on its website that it will be launching a Hello Kitty flight for one day only.
The airline will host a special overseas flight on 8 August to commemorate Father’s Day in Taiwan. The flight number is BR5288, which sounds close to “I love Dad” in Mandarin. Similarly, the cost of an economy class ticket for this flight will cost NT$5,288, inclusive of tax (~S$247.30). Those who want to go all out can fork out an extra NT$1,000 (~S$46.75) for business class tickets.
The best part about this flight is how it will allow passengers to go “overseas” despite the ongoing travel restrictions. The A330-300 Hello Kitty dream aircraft will depart from Taipei’s Taoyuan Airport at 10.30am. Over the next 2 hours and 45 minutes or so, it will fly over the east coast of Taiwan, head towards the Ryukyu Islands in Japan, before making its way back to Taoyuan Airport.
The plane will be flying at a lower altitude than usual at 20,000 to 25,000 feet. That means if the weather co-operates, you’ll be able to enjoy a birds’ eye view of the coastline. Even if there’s poor visibility, there’ll be plenty to keep you occupied during your flight.

The airline will provide free Wi-Fi text messaging service on board, so you can humblebrag to everyone else who’s stuck at home. There will be all sorts of exclusive gifts for all passengers too.

Naturally, that includes EVA Air x Sanrio goodies. But on top of that, passengers will receive overnight kits that are usually reserved for long-haul flights. Economy class passengers will receive a kit made up of Kipling products including an eye mask and keychain.
Those flying business class will receive a sleek hard-case Ferragamo overnight kit containing toiletries and other flight essentials.
When it comes to airplane food, it’s usually a love-hate affair. But passengers on the special Hello Kitty flight will live the high life when it comes to the food being served on-board as well. Travellers can choose from seafood chirashi rice designed by Michelin three-star chef Motoke Nakamura or beef sambal noodles.
Many of us have been lamenting about not being able to travel during these trying times. EVA Air’s special Hello Kitty flight might just be the start of more creative solutions to satiate our wanderlust. Unfortunately, those of us in Singapore won’t be able to make it for this flight since we can’t travel out of SG at the moment. Hopefully, Singapore Airlines has something similar up its sleeves too.
