How To DIY Your Own Hypebeast Sneakers

With athleisure dominating the runways, and HB2 VSCO filtered pictures of the latest kicks popping up on almost every street photographer’s IG feed, sneaker trends are here to stay.

However, you don’t have to break the bank to keep up. Instead, with a little DIY magic, you can revamp your old white school shoes, or get a pair for under S$8 on Taobao to achieve that Instagrammable Hypebeast/Hypebae look.

1. Ribbon Lace Sneakers

What you will need:

Simply replace the original shoelaces with the ribbon, and you’re done!

Tip: To prevent fraying at the ends of the ribbon, you can go over the ends with transparent nail polish.

2. Holographic Sneakers

What you will need:

  • A Pair Of White Canvas Shoes
  • Acrylic Paint (~S$7 from Artfriend)
  • Iridescent Film (S$3.99 from Spotlight)
  • Scissors
  • Masking Tape
  • Paint Brush
  • PVC glue or Mod Podge Glue (S$5.99 from Spotlight)

Firstly, wrap masking tape over the sole of the shoe. Then, paint over the shoes with the acrylic paint.

Finally, cut the iridescent film into strips, crinkle, and glue them on at random before setting aside to dry!

3. Paint Splatter Sneakers

What you will need:

  • A pair of white sneakers
  • Acrylic paint (~S$7 from Artfriend)
  • Brush
  • Newspaper
  • Masking Tape

Remove shoelaces and cover the sides and sole of the shoe with masking tape.

Using the brush, pick up paint and start flicking at random onto the shoe until you’re satisfied with how it looks.

4. Marbled Sneakers

What you will need:

  • A pair of white canvas sneakers
  • Masking/Painter’s Tape
  • Opaque Nail Polish of any colour ($2 from Daiso)
  • Toothpicks
  • Nail Polish Remover
  • Paper Towels
  • Large Tray
  • Water

Remove shoelaces and tape any areas you don’t want marbled.

Fill the tray with water and add drops of nail polish. Use a toothpick to swirl the polish around to create the marbling effect. Slowly dip the sneakers into the water.

Repeat steps till you’re satisfied with the end product. Set aside to dry before peeling away the masking tape.

Finally, clean up any areas that the nail polish might have seeped into with a paper towel soaked in nail polish remover.

5. Glitter Sneakers

What you will need:

  • A pair of white canvas sneakers
  • Glitter of any colour
  • Mod Podge Glue (S$5.99 from Spotlight)
  • Sponges
  • Newspaper
  • Paintbrush
  • Masking Tape

Firstly, place the newspaper on the floor to prevent any mess. Then using the sponge, apply glue to the areas you want to glitter.

Pour glitter generously over these areas, shake off the excess and let it dry. Finally, lightly seal the glitter with a final layer of glue with a paintbrush and leave it to dry.
