Atyy Malek’s Beauty Routine

Regular viewers of Suria would know that Atyy Malek is a force to be reckoned with. She recently delivered a heartbreaking performance in Suria’s Mother’s Day special Mamaku Bibikku—a contrast to her bubbly personality off-screen, which you can catch a glimpse of in Uniqlo’s AIRism innerwear ad.

Besides her stellar acting chops, it’s also her glowy makeup looks that keep us drawn to our screens like a moth to a flame. We got in touch with the actress to spill her skincare secrets and makeup go-tos.

If you could only take 3 beauty products with you to a desert island, which would they be and why?

Concealer, cleanser and a moisturising sunblock. I need to look fab when found, so I have to conceal my flaws. Cleansing is important and since you’re stuck on a deserted island, it’ll be hot. Sunblock is crucial too, so I would bring a moisturising one since I can’t take my moisturiser along.

Which acne treatment(s) do you reach for when you get sudden breakouts?

The Body Shop’s Tea Tree Oil or Tea Tree Skin Clearing Clay Mask. Or I’ll go for facials.

Which is the most underrated beauty product you’ve discovered?

I’ve been using skincare from Etude House and it really helps my skin. I love its Vita C range.

What’s the best beauty tip you’ve ever received?

Use an ice cube and rub it all over your face gently every morning before applying makeup to look fresher!

What was your worst makeup disaster and when did it happen?

When I was much younger, I was in dance club and knew nothing about makeup. I went onstage looking like wayang (theatrical). Looking back at those pictures, it looked disastrous to me!

What is your approach to makeup?

Makeup, I feel, is a beauty enhancement. It’s how you look at yourself. I only started knowing more about makeup when I became an actress. Before that, I knew nothing about makeup. My makeup was just eyeliner.

What has been your most embarrassing moment on set so far?

Syafie Naswip is very well-known for this film he [acted in] called Mukhsin. [When we were filming Lap Lip,] there was a sweet scene between us. I was saying my lines and called him Mukhsin throughout [the scene] and nobody corrected me.

When the director yelled “cut”, [Syafie] came up to me and said, “I think you just called me Mukhsin.” Oh my god, that was so embarrassing.

HAIR & BODY

Left to right:
Marc Anthony True Professional Repairing Macadamia Oil Treatment ($18.90)
Dove Nourishing Body Wash Sensitive Skin ($9.70)
Prada Candy Sugar Pop Eau de Parfum ($152)

What’s the highlight of your year so far?

When I was given the role [of a character who has to communicate] using sign language. Oh my god, that’s the best and most challenging role I have ever done.

How do you balance your work and social life/family time?

I always make sure to have off days on my schedule. I’ll block off some dates and fix dates to meet my friends and bring my parents out. Work-life balance is really important.
