Dating As An Introvert

As much as I like dating, I still experience the “first date jitters” every time. As a self-proclaimed introvert myself, I find it hard to come out of my shell when meeting someone new. How am I supposed to live, laugh and love in these conditions?

While going on a date with someone IRL for the first time can be nerve-wracking, it doesn’t necessarily have to always be that way. Lemon8 user Caitlin, aka @skincait, shares her own personal experience of dating as an introvert and dishes useful tips to encourage other super shy girls who are in their dating era.

Dating tips

1. Brainstorm topics before you meet

Like Taylor Swift’s “Mastermind”, it’s essential to have a game plan before you meet your date. Caitlin advises readers to formulate a list of questions so that there will not be awkward silences during the meet-up.

A bunch of us might brush off the texting stage but the Lemon8 user mentioned that it’s important to be proactive in asking questions when messaging your date before the actual meet-up. However, don’t go all out and ask everything about them either ― leave some questions for the IRL date too.

2. Do activities rather than going out for a meal

A meal is the usual go-to when it comes to first dates. However, suggesting a fun activity is one of the best ways to break the ice. For example, a shared interest in music would make a great karaoke date.

Caitlin added that an activity can act as both a distraction and a bonding experience so you and your date can have more topics to discuss about.

3. Have your date in a familiar area

Meeting up in a familiar area will give you a peace of mind as you don’t have to worry about where to go next. NGL, knowing the layout of the area can make a great escape plan too.

Caitlin also emphasised on the importance of not bringing your date to your favourite spot, just in case it doesn’t work out. Smart tip, to be honest.

4. Take the initiative to ask your date questions

Hate long awkward silences? You’re not alone. Take matters into your own hands by asking random questions to create banter. Or, you can just refer to your prepared question list if you struggle coming up with them on the fly.

By asking constant questions, it gives your date assurance that you’re genuinely trying to get to know them on a personal level.

5. Offer to go dutch

Guys may offer to foot the bill during the date as a kind gesture but for some of us, the feeling of being paiseh will always be at the back of our mind.

Caitlin mentioned that she would rather not feel the obligation to meet someone again if they were to pay for the date. She will usually step up and offer to go dutch aka splitting the bill. But if she and her date were to click very well, she said it’s okay to be pampered once in a while ― as you should, queen.

These Useful Dating Tips Will Help To Make You Less Nervous On Your First Date

Whether you’re an introvert, extrovert or somewhere in-between, it’s normal to be nervous when meeting your date for the first time. With Caitlin’s tips, hopefully your IRL date will be smooth-sailing. It’s time to slay, serve and survive your dates with your stunning personality, girlies.
