K-pop groups we want to see reunite

K-pop fans were recently treated to a wave of nostalgia and excitement as legendary groups BIG BANG and 2NE1 made surprise comebacks, reminding us all why they once ruled the industry. Their reunions sparked a collective yearning among fans, igniting hope that other iconic K-pop acts might also step back into the spotlight in 2025. From I.O.I to SISTAR, here are the acts we’d love to see grace the stage again.

1. Block B

In 2011, the 7-member hip-hop boy band Block B was formed to be “Korea’s Eminem Project”. Marked by an edge and grittiness that was rarely seen in K-pop at the time, Block B stood out from the boy band crowd, a fact compounded after their debut music video for their single, “Freeze!”, was banned for being too sexy.

While they achieved great success during their time as a group, Block B’s career has been dampened by several lawsuits against their management. When it came time for mandatory military enlistments in 2023, Block B went radio silent. Word has it that the brand is scheduled for a full-member comeback late this year, but we’re crossing our fingers that it comes with a new studio album. The group has not released new music since 2018.

2. I.O.I

ioi k-pop comebacks

Reality TV shows are a frequent source for new K-pop groups in South Korea, and I.O.I is arguably one of the biggest success stories to debut in this manner. Its 11 members were all contestants on Produce 101, a Mnet reality TV show that pit 101 trainees from all of South Korea’s major entertainment companies against one another to form the next big girl group.

I.O.I was only active for a year, between 2016 to 2017. In that time, they released several trap pop hits, such as “Dream Girls” and “Very, Very, Very”, as well as two EPs, and captured the hearts of many fans. It might not be possible for them to come back under the I.O.I name, but hey, we can hope.

3. Wonder Girls

Listen, if BIG BANG and 2NE1 can make a comeback, we can hope for OG girl group Wonder Girls to announce a reunion as well. Founded in 2007, the original lineup included members Sunye, Yeeun, Sunmi, Hyuna, and Sohee. The group achieved significant success with their singles “So Hot” and “Nobody,” the latter making them the first South Korean act to enter the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2009.

The group continued on for a decade before disbanding. Their legacy, however, continues as one of the most prominent girl groups in the history of K-pop.

4. Girl’s Day

Across their 9 years as an active group, Girl’s Day has been minted as one of the most influential celebrity groups thanks to their wide array of endorsements, from LG to Lotte World. Outside of being early game influencers, the 4-women group are best known for their fun, midtempo tracks laced with R&B and jazz influences. Songs like  “Something” and “Ring My Bell” sound way ahead of the curve, despite being released a decade ago.

5. Monsta X

Monsta X is another product from a K-pop reality TV show. Making their debut in 2015, the 6-man group is renowned for their genre-bending sound, blending K-pop, hip-hop, and R&B. During their career, the group has garnered significant fame in Asia, especially Japan. They even released an English-language album, All About Luv, that debuted on the US Billboard Top 200 list.

In spite of their success, they had several controversies that have impacted their reputation. One member, Wonho, had to leave the group in 2019 amid serious allegations, including owing money to an ex-roommate and past drug use. If we could have a factory reset on the brand’s reputation, and take them as they were during their heyday, we’d love that.

6. SISTAR

SISTAR debuted with the single “Push Push” in June 2010, quickly gaining attention and popularity. Their first studio album, So Cool, was released in 2011, with several chart-topping hits. SISTAR soon became known for their summer hits, thanks to upbeat tracks like “So Cool” and “Give It To Me” dropping during the season.

Unfortunately, in 2017, the band disbanded after promoting their final single, “Lonely”. They had a brief reunion performance in 2022 in support of member Hyolyn’s solo career, which we’re choosing to believe is a teaser for a potential reunion.

7. Miss A

While Miss A was only around for 5 years, the girl group is best known for launching the career of Bae Suzy, who has since become a solo star in her own right. We wished they had more time in the limelight to come into their own as a group, because their charted hits, from “Bad Girl Good Girl” to “Good-bye Baby” prove they’ve got the sauce.

K-pop groups we wish would come back

The idea of reunions from legendary K-pop groups sparks joy and hope for fans longing to relive the magic. Here’s to hoping that 2025 brings more surprise reunions!
