In 2000, many Singaporeans witnessed and experienced the Hello Kitty craze, queuing overnight to score kawaii Hello Kitty plushies from McDonald’s. Round 2 could now be happening, with news that McDonald’s is teasing another Hello Kitty collaboration on 25 January 2024. Fingers crossed that it could be a McDonald’s x Hello Kitty mahjong set, that is already available in McDonald’s Hong Kong.
Just a year ago, McDonald’s China released its limited edition mahjong set, showcasing iconic menu items like McNuggets and fries. Thanks to the positive reception from customers, it may not come as a surprise that the fast food chain has decided to introduce a new mahjong set this year, featuring Hello Kitty.
A glance at the Hello Kitty mahjong set, and you’ll immediately notice its classy design. The mahjong set comes in a faux leather case, with half of Hello Kitty’s face and McDonald’s logo on the exterior.
Hold your breath when you open the case. You’ll be greeted by an adorable illustration of Hello Kitty amidst a pile of her iconic red ribbons, along with McDonald’s menu items like an ice cream cone, fries, and burgers. Plus, the interior is lined in yellow, highlighting one of McDonald’s signature colours.
Diving deeper into the details, the Hello Kitty mahjong set includes 144 mahjong tiles, see-through playing dice, two spare blank tiles, and a red wind indicator that features McDonald’s logo.
Instead of standard mahjong tile designs, these tiles are adorned with unique Hello Kitty motifs. For instance, the direction tiles pay tribute to the Japanese cat by featuring its iconic red ribbon on each Chinese character.
Furthermore, some of the mahjong tiles also have Hello Kitty holding a menu item, such as a pack of fries and a burger.
To prevent scalpers from selling replicas, McDonald’s has also included a gold authentication card with a unique serial number. This means if you manage to receive a set with the number 8888, you’ll also probably luck out this year with amazing prosperity and fortune.
As of now, we can’t be sure if McDonald’s will bring the Hello Kitty mahjong set to Singapore, but we are hopeful. While we wait for them to share more deets about the upcoming Hello Kitty collaboration, check out this FairPrice Disney Princess mahjong set.
