As someone with curly, frizz-prone hair, I’ve always had a love-hate relationship with hairdryers. No matter how much I prep with heat protectants or serums, most dryers leave my curls dry, poofy, and undefined. That’s why I usually avoid them altogether—unless I’m in a rush.
I’ve heard a lot about high-end, heat-free dryers that are curly hair-friendly, but let’s be real: spending hundreds of dollars on a hairdryer isn’t exactly budget-friendly. So when I got my hands on the new Philips Series 8000 ThermoShield Advanced hairdryer, which claims to dry hair quickly while reducing heat damage and frizz, I was excited and sceptical to see if it could finally work for my hair. Its relatively affordable $249 price tag doesn’t hurt either.
Here’s how it went.

The first thing I noticed was how lightweight this dryer is. My arms usually get tired when blow-drying my thick hair, but this one felt easy to hold. It’s also compact, which makes it a great option for travel—no more lugging around a bulky dryer in my luggage.

One of the biggest selling points of this hairdryer is its powerful brushless DC motor, which spins at 110,000 rotations per minute and blows air at an impressive 228 km/h. That means my thick, curly hair—normally a nightmare to dry—was completely dry in under 7 minutes (some people can even dry their hair in 3 minutes!).
Even better, the ThermoShield Advanced sensors prevented heat damage by keeping the temperature controlled. My hair felt noticeably softer after drying, and I didn’t experience the usual dryness or breakage I get with other dryers.
Frizz is my worst enemy, so I was excited to try the Dual Airstream technology, which pulls in air from two inputs and condenses it into one powerful, smooth stream. Combined with the 200 million negative and water ions that boost hydration and shine by up to 58%, my curls actually looked glossy, defined, and frizz-free—no extra hair oils serums needed.
For once, I didn’t feel like I had to air-dry my curls to keep them looking healthy.
Another thing I loved? The gentle temperature settings. I’ve had my fair share of dryers that feel like they’re scorching my scalp, but this one felt surprisingly comfortable, even in higher settings. The diffuser attachment also helped define my curls without blasting them with too much heat.
While I love how well this dryer works, the controls aren’t as intuitive as other high-end models. The button placement is a bit awkward, and I accidentally switched modes a few times while using it.
I also wish it came with more attachments, instead of just one diffuser. If you like to switch up your styling, that might be something to consider.
For a fraction of the price of high-end dryers, the Philips Series 8000 is fast, lightweight, and actually works for frizz-prone hair. If you have curly or thick hair and struggle to find a dryer that doesn’t turn your hair into a poufy mess, this might just be the affordable alternative you’ve been looking for.
