When you think of a Chinese wedding in Singapore, you typically think of a full-day affair culminating in a hotel ballroom ceremony. The ceremony is punctuated by the same few events, from the walk-in to different outfit changes, a banquet-style meal, toasts, and some wedding videos sprinkled in between.
For Singaporean couple Oskar and Sherry Song, though, they wanted to make sure their traditional wedding still allowed their individuality to shine through. For that reason, the duo decided to kick off their traditional wedding on a nerdy note—with a Star Wars-themed guard of honour.
As a sword enthusiast, Oskar cites the Star Wars guard of honour as the safest way he could showcase one of his greatest passions at a wedding.

Oskar and Sherry’s families are both very traditionally Chinese, and so, the couple kept the Star Wars-themed guard of honour as a surprise, lest they face pushback. Needless to say, though, the march-in was a hit among guests.
Otherwise, they stuck to a glitzy red carpet, old Hollywood theme for their wedding, with other unique touches like an ang bao collection box shaped like a vintage ticket booth, handcrafted by a close friend.
Oskar and Sherry shared their wedding story with ZULA for our latest YouTube series, I Did. In recounting their wedding and how to balance traditional expectations with their individuality, the couple advises soon-to-be newlyweds that “the most important thing is to have fun”.
Sherry says that while it’s important to cater to your relatives and cultural mores, at the end of the day, it is your wedding, so it’s important to find ways to weave in what you love.
