The Benzi Project may jest that being a Peranakan is merely “a state of mind”, but there’s no denying what this ethnic group has blessed us with. Apart from delicious delicacies, intricate beadwork and classic batik textiles have also made a mark on our local culture.
This could be why Starbucks has tapped into the rich Peranakan tapestry to create its latest collection of products for this year’s upcoming National Day.
For this limited-edition collection, Starbucks has brought out Vintage Tile Mugs ($20.90 each), a Reusable Bag ($15.90) and a Water Bottle ($22.90) adorned with prints and patterns.
The mugs are a must-have for Starbucks collectors, while the nylon bag and water bottle are perfect for the cultured eco-warrior in your life.
In addition to artsy Peranakan designs, Starbucks has also drawn inspiration from other iconic symbols of nostalgia in Singapore. You’ll spot shophouses and playgrounds of yesteryear reinterpreted in each of the new products.
Dragon playgrounds have become a major emblem in Singapore’s history, so Starbucks has given it a modern spin with the National Day Cold Cup ($29.90). The dome-shaped lid recreates the notable landmark with miniatures splashed in shades of yellow, baby pink and mint green.
