Low-effort Halloween costumes for 2024

Halloween falls on 31 October every year and is a holiday with many traditions. In Singapore, our version of celebrating is going to Halloween parties and dressing up with our friends or partners.

Despite this yearly tradition, it can be a real pain to come up with a costume, and it’s even worse to discover that the costume you picked out requires you to buy something expensive or make certain elements from scratch. This year, let’s avoid costumes that need way too much effort to carry out and stick with low-effort Halloween costumes that barely require you to lift a finger to execute, except maybe to check out your carts!

Here are 10 low-effort Halloween costume ideas you can try out this Halloween.

1. Alfredo Linguini and Remy from Ratatouille

This unique costume idea will definitely get you many compliments! Alfredo Linguini and Remy from the hit 2007 film Ratatouille are definitely an iconic duo that you and your best friend can dress up as this Halloween. Simply wear the colours that the characters wear—in this case, it’s white for Alfredo and grey for Remy—and put on rat ears or a chef’s hat to complete the look. For Alfredo, you can also carry a wooden rolling pin to really sell the costume.

2. Care Bears

If you want to go more cutesy for Halloween, you and your friends can dress up as these adorable Care Bears. There is a Care Bear in every colour you can think of, so you can just pick the one that matches the clothes in your closet best. All this costume needs is clothes in the colour of the Care Bear you picked, the signature belly mark, which you can either draw or print, and some bear ears, which can be made using coloured paper and a headband to avoid having to tell confused people who you are all night.

3. Alvin and the Chipmunks

Alvin and the Chipmunks are one of the most famous sibling trios, and their outfits are relatively easy to mimic. Each chipmunk has a signature colour: red for Alvin, blue for Simon, and green for Theodore. Alvin and Simon have additional elements to complete their looks, such as an “A” on Alvin’s shirt and glasses for Simon’s look. If you got invited to a last-minute Halloween party and need a costume ASAP, this is a good option for you and your friends.

4. Black Cat

Though cliche, dressing up as a black cat is a costume idea that will never go out of style. The best part? You can dress the costume up or down any way you want to.

Whether you decide to wear a black dress, some pants, or even just some shorts, people will be able to tell what your costume is once you put on some cat ears and draw on whiskers with some black eyeliner. This costume is the epitome of low effort, but it’s foolproof.

5. Kim Possible

Yet another classic, Kim Possible is a simple costume that you can do as most of the items are probably already in your closet. You just need a black long-sleeved top, green cargo pants, black gloves, a belt, and some boots. Bonus if you already have orange hair or wear an orange wig.

Wednesday Addams is definitely on the spookier side of things, with her cold demeanour and goth aesthetic. If you are looking to be scary on Halloween, this is the costume for you. To dress up as Wednesday, you mainly need a black dress, some black knee-high socks, and black shoes. Remember to tie your hair in her signature braids and put on any dark-coloured lipstick, though Wednesday prefers black.

Challengers took the world by storm this year, and one of the things that left everyone in awe was Tashi Duncan’s style. From tennis pro to coach, she was an it girl right from the beginning.

This costume idea has 2 different variations, and you can choose which to portray based on your hair length. For those with long hair, you can dress up as young Tashi, with athleisure and tennis shoes, alongside slicking back your hair into a ponytail or braid. Add a racquet as an extra touch.

For girlies with short hair, you can dress up as older Tashi instead. In the movie, older Tashi has a very chic sense of style. Try wearing a simple button-down with some jeans and heels. Add a bracelet stack and a nice bag to complete the full Tashi Duncan look.

8. Sydney and Carmy from The Bear

One of the best shows in recent times was The Bear, a show about a Chicago sandwich shop being run after the previous owner died. In the show, chefs Sydney and Carmy don a uniform, which consists of a white shirt, blue apron and some black pants. This costume will make you go “Yes, chef!” at how easy it is to execute since it only requires a couple of components you probably have at home.

Bonus: if you are dressing up as Sydney, you can also add a bandana to keep your hair out of your face.

9. Regina George from Mean Girls
