Runway-Taobao Fashion Trend Hacks

Looking hot off the runway every day isn’t something reserved for supermodels or the insta-famous. Truth be told, all you need is a little patience and a steady WIFI connection to find a budget-friendly alternative on Taobao.

And here’s the good news: we’ve already rounded up some of our favourite 2017 runway looks and found their Taobao counterparts for you. In a few months, these looks we chose are set to dominate the street style circuit—sans thick coats lest you casually die in the Singapore heat.

Furthermore, if you’re a UOB Cardmember, you can be entitled to online-exclusive promotions from 18 June to 12 July. Find out more at the end of the article.

1. Bold Reds

Left to Right: Rag & Bone, Christian Dior

Red isn’t reserved for Hong Baos and CNY. The bold shade has found new life in soft tulles and tough leather jackets soon-to-be seen all over the street style circuit. Take a cue from Rag & Bone and incorporate the colour with athleisure styling for a more casual spin. If going full red seems like a daunting task, work the colour into your outfit with boots or a bag, à la Mode Fendi’s OTK boots.

2. Deconstructed shirting

Left to Right: Monse, Celine, Off White

The more high-fashion take on your boyfriend’s button-down, the deconstructed shirt is seen from Celine to Monse, adding a distinct too-cool-to-care vibe to any outfit. Pair with structured knee-high boots to balance the slouchy silhouette of your top.

3. Double-denim

Left to right: Dior, Calvin Klein Collection, Stella McCartney

Nail the double-denim look seen across catwalks with ease by pairing your favourite jeans with a light wash jacket for an easy day look. A denim jumpsuit is also a great day-to-night piece that can be styled elegantly, or with a tomboy charm.

4. Micro-pleats

Left to Right: Celine, Loewe, Valentino

If you went to an all-girls Secondary school, pleats probably remind you of the uniform folds you (or your mum) had to painstakingly iron. The updated micro-pleat trend, however, is arguably one of the best styles for beating the summer heat—and they don’t crinkle or crease.

To keep this billowy style form flattering, cinch your skirt or dress at the waist with a statement belt which is also very on-trend this season.

5. Suiting

Left to Right: Dolce & Gabbana, Celine

This season’s suiting proves structure can be sexy. Over-sized, structured jackets as seen by the likes of Dolce & Gabbana, Celine, Alexander Wang, and Dries Van Noten cut a sharp figure at Fashion Week. To avoid looking like you raided your Ah Gong’s closet, balance strong shoulders with deep necklines or formal fabrics with sneakers.

6. Asymmetrical Hem

Left to Right: Dolce & Gabbana, Isabel Marant

Versatile enough to take you from day to night, the asymmetrical hem comes in a variety of shapes to suit your body type. Show off some leg with diagonal cuts, or choose a more flowy shape to lengthen your silhouette for a look that’s casual, fun, yet edgy.

7. Modern bohemian

Alexander McQueen

Going boho isn’t just about flowy dresses and floral prints this season. Alexander McQueen modernised the usual boho-babe on his runways with leather bralettes, boots and heavy-metal accessories. For a more conservative outfit alternative, layer your sheer maxi over ripped skinny jeans for a look any street style star would approve of.

8. One-shouldered 80’s trend

Left to Right: Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini, Isabel Marant, Saint Laurent par Hedi Slimane

Channel your inner Carrie Bradshaw because 80’s glam is making a comeback. The one-shouldered trend has been revived, with added details ranging from large ruffles to ribbons (which are also a huge trend this season). When playing with such bold pieces, it’s important to keep the rest of your outfits streamlined to avoid looking over-the-top. For truly vintage looks, raid your mum’s cupboard for her 80’s agogo pieces.

9. Shades of pink

Left to Right: Blumarine, Valentino, Michael Kors

Gum may be banned in Singapore but bubblegum pink sure isn’t. From fuchsia to pale blush tones, pink has dominated Fall 2017’s runway. Take a cue from these runway looks and let the stand-out shade be the centrepiece of your outfit.

10. Fluted dresses

Left to Right: Isabel Marant, Christian Dior

Flute dresses got a makeover this season with rugged detailing and Parisian-chic accessories. The quintessentially feminine style can be paired with boots, leather bralettes or berets to add a cool-chick edge for a fresh take on this summer style.
