It’s easy to scroll through our Instagram feeds and comment on how chio our friends look in their new pictures. But while we’re always looking at other people, it’s not often that we look at ourselves in the mirror and objectively rate our appearances.
In a recent survey conducted by Answers.sg with 1594 respondents, 20% of Singaporeans view themselves as below average, whereas 30% of them think completely otherwise. Read on to find out more about how Singaporeans rate their own attractiveness.
Out of 20% of the respondents who rated themselves as below average, 7% voted “very unattractive”.
In a YouTube video filmed by TheSmartLocal where 99 Singaporeans rate their attractiveness, those who rated themselves a low number gave reasons such as “I don’t have very high self-confidence” and “it’s because of the lack of compliments that I receive”.
One participant went on to elaborate, “I just don’t want to see myself as the centre of attention or be in the spotlight”.
On the contrary, 30% of the respondents voted themselves as above average, with 11% agreeing that they are “attractive”, and 5% voting “very attractive”.
One participant in the video shared, “over time in life I have figured out who I am as a person. So attractiveness is not just about how I look on the outside, but who I am on the inside.”
Some participants explained that it was due to their glow-up throughout the years. “I managed to gain a lot more self-confidence after growing up, became comfortable in my own skin, and realising what really makes me happy.”
Interestingly, 23% of Singaporeans voted that they were “average”, whereas another 27% did not bother to rank themselves — taking up the highest percentage of votes in this poll. Rather than our own looks, it seems like we’re more kaypoh about how others view themselves instead.
A participant in TheSmartLocal’s video shared, “I wouldn’t say I’m very bad looking, but I also wouldn’t say I’m like all those models out there,” while another admitted, “I think I’m still learning to love myself”.
It’s impossible to deny that first impressions are more often than not, based on their physical attributes only. Through this survey, it’s also surprising to see that there’s an even mix of opinions for Singaporeans when it comes to rating their own attractiveness.
At the end of the day, looks aren’t always everything, but confidence is key to how you present yourself to others. Head over to Answers.sg to participate in more fun polls and also earn points to convert them into vouchers and other rewards.
In a previous poll, it was also discovered that 68% of Singaporeans believe that the bill should be split on the first date.
