Starbucks Miyashita Park Is In A Rooftop Garden Above Tokyo’s Newest Mall & Has Hypebeast-Worthy Merch

Starbucks Miyashita Park

In the months since travelling has ground to a halt, the list of new destinations to visit in Tokyo gets longer by the day. The latest addition is Miyashita Park in Shibuya ward. It has a rooftop park, shopping mall, restaurants, cafes and a hotel within its grounds. As if that weren’t exciting enough, it’s also home to the coolest Starbucks outlet yet, Starbucks Miyashita Park.

The outlet was designed by streetwear legend, Hiroshi Fujiwara of fragment design. He also worked on a line of tumblers and t-shirts, which will be sold exclusively in-store. Starbucks Miyashita Park opened at 8am on 4 August 2020 and attracted snaking queues right off the bat. Let’s take a closer look at the store design, as well as the merch!

Store design

Hiroshi Fujiwara is a designer and musician who has collaborated with everyone from Nike to Louis Vuitton. Often called the “godfather of streetwear”, his design sensibilities are clearly reflected in the store, which has a pared-back aesthetic reminiscent of Bauhaus buildings.

Fujiwara’s intention was for the store to resemble a gas station in the middle of nowhere, a box on a vast empty lot. The result is a white rectangular building that looks like a container cabin. The only pop of colour is the iconic Starbucks green across the side of the roof and on the ground. Black tables and chairs sit on the green area, which extends from the inside of the store to the outside, seamlessly becoming one with the surrounding grass patch.

Inside, the design is similarly stripped back, with grey walls and white furnishings. The wire mesh ceiling is the same as the wire used elsewhere around the park, including the fences and benches. Once again, this adds to the overall cohesiveness of the design with its surroundings.

The back of the chairs read “FRGT MYST”, which stands for fragment and Miyashita. Even the staff uniforms are original designs by Fujiwara just for this outlet. Sadly, you can’t cart the chairs or the uniform back home with you. Thankfully, the same logo can be found on the merch exclusive to this store.

The merch

Fujiwara designed a series of tumblers and t-shirts just for Starbucks Miyashita Park. Like the Starbucks x Undefeated collection, this will make perfect souvenirs for all the hypebeasts out there.

Choose from 4 bottles and 1 tumbler, each sporting the Starbucks siren logo and fragment design’s lightning bolt logo. The words “FRGMT MYST” will signify to those in the know that you’ve already made your pilgrimage to this store. Prices range from ¥2,500 (~S$32.40) for the clear bottle (extreme left) to ¥4,700 (~S$61) for the black stainless steel bottle (second from right).

Fujiwara designed 2 t-shirts, one in white and another in black. This is the first time Starbucks will be selling a t-shirt, so Starbucks stans will want to get in on the action too. There are 4 sizes available, from S to XL. The shirts retail for ¥6,900 (~S$89.50) each.

While most Starbucks collections tend to be seasonal, these products will be sold at this store all year round. This means you won’t have to worry about not being able to get your hands on the items due to the current travel restrictions. At the moment, only 1 of each item can be purchased per person.
