Singapore Street Style: LASALLE College of the Arts (October 2019)

Street Style Snaps At LASALLE College of the Arts

Last time around, we took to Orchard Road, Somerset and Dhoby Ghaut to find out what’s trending on the streets of Singapore. This time, we decided to make our rounds in schools, starting with LASALLE College of the Arts.

Have a look at how the quirky kids are dressing these days.

1. Eva (@milkacne), 19, Fine Arts

Hat: A store at Bugis Street
Top: Error 404
Skirt: The Salvation Army
Shoes: Dr. Martens

Bright colours are what Eva feels most comfortable in, be it when it comes to her clothes, makeup—or even her choice of a green trash bin as a prop. She paired a long-sleeved red turtleneck top with a gold skater skirt. She topped off her look with black boots and a pink woven hat, an impulse purchase that has quickly become a staple in her wardrobe.

Apart from browsing secondhand pieces at The Salvation Army, Eva recommends shopping at Bugis Street. She also points out that Orchard Gateway is a good place to check out if you want to support local designers.

2. Christine (@salsamamita), 20, Fine Arts

Earrings: @moonearthfolks
Blouse: Korean store at JCube
Dress: Esprit
Belt: A store at Bugis Street
Socks: Mizuno
Shoes: Dr. Martens

“Victorian punk” is how Christine describes her style. With a penchant for history, her ensemble is the lovechild of a baroque painting and punk legend Siouxsie Sioux.

She layered an orange blouse with a wide ruffle collar under a simple black shift dress and tied it together with a silver belt. Shoes are the centrepiece in all her outfits, so she wore a quirky pair of rockabilly-inspired Mary Janes with red socks.

“I buy my clothes from Bugis Street or thrift stores. There’s this flea party bazaar every weekend at Lucky Plaza. Sometimes, 3 pieces go for $10 or 1 for $5,” Christine shares.

3. Bridgitt (@briiwan), 20, Fashion Media

Earrings: Taobao
Necklace: Myrrh
Bag: Muji
Shirt: @luckychancestore
Top: Taobao
Bottom: Taobao
Shoes: Dolls Kill

Bridgitt’s blonde buzz cut caught our attention, but her outfit was just as visually arresting. She doesn’t shy away from bold colours and prints. Here, she combined a black tank top with bright orange pants and tied them together with a tropical shirt.

A fan of neon and clashing prints, the experimental fashion student is often inspired by Japanese and Korean cultures from the ’80s and ’90s. Bridgitt gets most of her clothes from Taobao and Big Bundle stores when she goes thrifting in JB.

4. Do Yeon (@doyeonkm), 19, Design Communication

Earrings: The Ordinary Co.
Top: Thrifted from Dongmyo market in Seoul, Korea
Bottom: Zara
Shoes: Zara
Wallet: Tory Burch

Taking a page from style influencers like Karen Yeung (@iamkareno), Do Yeon’s ensemble was a mix of high-street and high-end items. She was dressed in an all-black outfit, but the red flower print on her shirt and floral wallet added a striking punch of colour to her look.

Also an avid thrift shopper, Do Yeon enjoys hunting for gems in Korea with a group of friends. For those who shy away from more experimental outfits, the Design Communication student encourages you to “wear whatever you feel like, even if you think it’s ridiculous.”

5. Peggy (@_pepperpie), 21, Design Communication

Hat: Taobao
Earrings: Taobao
Necklace: DIY
Outerwear: Thrifted
Top: Taobao
Bottom: Taobao
Shoes: Dr Martens

Peggy’s style draws from a mixture of grunge, heavy metal and goth subcultures, which means she gravitates toward black clothes. When we met her, she had paired a dragon motif shirt with a pleated skater skirt, along with a washed black cargo jacket.

Just like Bridgitt, Peggy enjoys scrolling through Taobao for affordable finds, while she heads to the Bugis area to look for accessories.

6. Cheyenne, 19, Audio Production

Hair clips: ezbuy
Top: A store at Haji Lane
Belt: ezbuy
Bottom: ezbuy
Shoes: Vans

Referencing skater fashion from the ’90s, Cheyenne enjoys wearing baggier clothes. She styled a pair of comfy blue jeans with a shirt adorned with geometric patterns. Her footwear that day was a pair of white sneakers from Vans.

Cheyenne’s teal-coloured hair also made our heads turn. If you want to bleach your hair at home, she recommends using products from Korean beauty brand Aprilskin for easy, DIY pastel hair.

7. Dong Qi (@dong_xiao_qi), 20, Fashion Design

Outerwear: Pull & Bear
Top: A gift from her mum
Bottom: Metersbonwe
Shoes: Nike
Wallet: MCM

Comfort is key for Dong Qi. For this outfit, she stuck with a neutral palette, matching a white tee with striped culottes and Nike kicks with pastel details. Her favourite article of clothing is a light pink nylon jacket that perfectly complements her vivid peach-coloured hair.

Like most of the other LASALLE students, she shops for affordable items on Taobao. She avoids impulse shopping and considers how each new piece will go with her existing wardrobe before making a purchase.

Street Style Snaps At LASALLE College of the Arts

We expected eccentric outfits from the cool kids at LASALLE, and they didn’t disappoint. These unique individuals gave us a good dose of style inspiration, and, thanks to them, we’re seriously considering a louder hair colour too.

We hope to see you at our next street style hunt!
