From Korean dating shows such as Single’s Inferno to our own local One Week Love, it’s safe to say that we’re all hooked on relationship dramas. Plus, with the kaypoh nature of Singaporeans, it’s no surprise that we’re always on the hunt for new and juicy content.
While we’re potentially waiting for One Week Love Season 2, there’s a new “dating show” that’s going viral on TikTok — Uncle Raymond’s Dating Show. With over 20 episodes that are each only a few minutes long, this show takes speed dating to the next level.
Many Singaporeans may recognise Uncle Raymond from his iconic dance trend, but it seems like the TikTok sensation is also a man of many talents. The dating show is titled “非诚勿扰”, which translates to “You Are The One”, with Uncle Raymond himself as the host.
Each short episode begins with Uncle Raymond introducing himself and the purpose of the programme, which is to help singles in Singapore to find a partner. So far, he has covered a variety of different regions such as Orchard Road, West Mall and Buangkok MRT Station.
Each episode introduces the contestants one by one, with Uncle Raymond asking simple questions such as their name, age and their ideal type. After the introduction, interested contestants will raise their hands if they want to be considered as a partner, and a contestant from the opposite sex will stand in front of them if the feeling is mutual.
No slow burn here — just a few seconds of matchmaking in each episode is equivalent to an entire season of Single’s Inferno.
Once the couple is confirmed, the episode ends with Uncle Raymond declaring them a match, and the couple will then hold hands and walk away.
Despite the show being conducted in Chinese, there is no race or age limit to the participants. In some episodes, foreigners from Vietnam and the Philippines also make an appearance, where Uncle Raymond interviews them in English.
While this dating show isn’t as juicy as the ones that we’re used to watching on TV, not every episode ends with a happy ending either.
In one episode, netizens were shocked to see that an 18-year-old boy was paired with a 44-year-old woman. But funnily enough, the boy made an appearance again in another episode — I guess the matchmaking just wasn’t successful.
In another episode, a male contestant refused to pick any of the female contestants and walked off. Uncle Raymond then asked the female contestants how they felt about this rejection, to which they cheerfully replied “it doesn’t matter, there’s always a next time!”
While Uncle Raymond emphasised that this show was created just for fun, he also highlighted that it serves to “improve participants’ language skills, interpersonal communication skills and personal confidence”.
If you’re someone like me who has a short attention span, perhaps this is your sign to binge watch all 23 episodes of You Are The One on TikTok. NGL, all of the funny filters and intense background music is what keeps me coming back for more hilarious content.
The best part? It seems like Uncle Raymond has already matched over 20 couples so far. All of the episodes can be found on Uncle Raymond’s TikTok playlist.
