When Apple released the first generation of AirPods in 2016, the wireless earbuds captured the public’s attention instantly. There were viral memes, quirky AirPods cases and more. Last year, the tech giant continued to ride on the success with the release of the AirPods Pro in October. Apple just announced that it is adding yet another new product to its AirPods line-up: the AirPods Max.
Unlike its predecessors, the AirPods Max is a pair of wireless headphones that go over your ears. Oh and, it costs $849. As usual, netizens have a lot to say about the price and design. Scroll to the end to see some of their comments, including how the case resembles a woman’s undergarment.
Like the AirPods before it, the AirPods Max connects to your phone via Bluetooth and is completely wireless. However, it comes in 1 piece, so you won’t have to worry about losing either side of it; a feeling most AirPods users will be familiar with.
The headphones have 8 microphones in total to ensure that it is completely noise-cancelling, which means you will be able to block out background noises while WFH, be it drilling from your neighbour’s renovation or your husband snoring. Six are outward-facing to detect noise in your environment and 2 monitor the sound that goes into your ears.
The AirPods Max comes with its own Smart Case that puts the headphones in low-battery mode when not in use. Considering how everyone from Louis Vuitton to Prada and Chanel came up with their own take on AirPods cases, we can’t wait to see what designs they’re going to unveil for the AirPods Max case in the future.
The headphones are also the first in the AirPods series to come without a charging case. Instead, it has a Lightning port on one end of the headphones to charge it directly.
Aside from the fact that there is almost nothing “pod-like” about the new AirPods Max, another difference is that there are now 5 colours to choose from as opposed to just a singular white option. Namely, the classic Silver and Space Grey, as well as green, blue and pink.
The pink headphones also slightly resemble Laneige’s Neo Cushion, which coincidentally looks like the normal AirPods case.
The headphones come with a Digital Crown on one side that enables you to control the volume, skip between tracks and answer phone calls. This means you won’t have to actively do these actions on your phone like with the AirPods and AirPods Pro, making it more convenient.

Since it is a new Apple product, it has, of course, stirred quite a bit of controversy online, much like the iPhone 12 in blue released earlier this year.
Singaporean Twitter user, @tzehern_ (aka Yeolo) felt so strongly about the high price point that he tweeted that he expects to hear himself from the future with the AirPods Max. Others have shared similar thoughts, like how they expect to “hear colours” or hear other people’s thoughts with these headphones.
Apple is synonymous with design, so it’s no wonder that many of the tweets touch on this aspect as well. For example, Twitter user @dictionarydaddy commented that the headphones look like they belong on Teletubbies.
Another common sentiment was that the case for the wireless headphones looks like a bra, a purse, or a combination of both, as shown by Twitter user @tsantsai.
The AirPods Max will be available for order soon on Apple Singapore’s website and in the Apple Store app. Word on the street is that orders in the U.S. are already starting to back up, so if you want to get it as a Christmas gift, do stay tuned to the site and app for the launch date.
