Get this ‒ Squid Game may have been released almost two years ago, but its success is phenomenal. It allowed Netflix to invest billions of dollars in Korean content, pushing out other instalments of hit series such as Single’s Inferno and Physical: 100.
Now, the streaming platform is back with an exciting piece of news to tease fans who have been eagerly waiting for the second season of Squid Game.
For those who didn’t catch the Emmy Award-winning series, Squid Game Season 1 is a nine-episode show that features hundreds of cash-strapped players who compete in children’s games such as Red Light, Green Light, which turn deadly.
The games expose players to the ugly side of human nature, highlighting how some resort to trickery and betrayal in order to survive. Eventually, the final winner walks home with a whopping cash prize of KRW$45 billion (~S$46.9 million).
If you recall the last episode of Squid Game Season 1, it ended on a cliffhanger when Seong Gi-Hun, played by Lee Jung-Jae, was determined to find out the new mastermind behind the games.
While we’re unsure if Season 2 will feature him entering the game again, Netflix has recently dropped new deets about the highly anticipated show.
Reprising their respective roles in Season 2 of the hit series, Lee Jung-Jae will return as Seong Gi-Hun, Lee Byeong-Hun as Frontman, Wi Ha-Jun as Hwang Jun-Ho, and Gong Yoo will also be joined by four new players.
K-drama and K-pop lovers would recognise Yim Si-Wan, who has made a name for himself through popular shows such as Moon Embracing The Sun, Misaeng, and Run On. Since the actor has also won numerous acting awards, I’m sure viewers will be curious about his character on the show.
Kang Ha-Neul is another familiar face, especially if you’ve watched When The Camellia Blooms, starring Gong Hyo-Jin, and Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart, featuring IU. Apart from his notable works, he was also listed on Forbes’ Korea Power Celebrity in 2020, and received the honourable Baeksang Arts Award for Best Actor in 2020.
From playing Yesol’s biological father in The Glory to portraying a player desperate for cash in Squid Game Season 2, Park Sung-Hoon is an up-and-rising actor for us to look out for.
Yang Dong-Geun might not ring a bell to some, but he is known as the loving father of Joy during his appearance on The Return Of Superman. Seeing how he may play a key character in Squid Game Season 2, there’s all the more reason to catch the new series once it is released.
Now that Netflix has announced the new cast members for Squid Game Season 2, we can’t wait for the official release date of the exciting series.
While we wait for more details to drop, check out these Squid Game life lessons in the meantime.
