S.T. Dupont Mahjong Set

In Singapore, having more than $1.2 million can get you a HDB resale flat in a prime location… or a luxurious mahjong set by French luxury brand S.T. Dupont.

Made of real rubies and diamonds, the S.T. Dupont mahjong set is an extravagant splurge for quality rounds of mahjong for you and your kakis. Creative or ridiculous? You decide.

The mahjong set

We’ve seen novelty mahjong sets like the ones from Sanrio and Louis Vuitton, but never have we encountered one that costs a whopping $1.2 million.

S.T. Dupont Mahjong Set

Enter the S.T. Dupont mahjong set, a luxurious playing package that was handcrafted for more than 8 months. The mahjong set includes 144 tiles, 98 intricately-carved coins, and two dice that are accented with gold vermeil in the corners.

While luxury is a key factor in the overall design, the artist also took into consideration the meaning of the material used. Tanzanian ruby symbolises the energy of the sun, nobility, and royalty, which is perhaps why the gemstone was chosen to craft the mahjong tiles.

As a way to protect the ruby from damage, gold vermeil was hand-hammered to surround each individual mahjong tile. Similarly, gold was selected because it is a symbolic colour of the five legendary emperors of ancient China. Plus, it also signifies neutrality and good luck, so you have higher chances of huat during your games.

If that isn’t impressive enough, a total of more than 1,000 Burma rubies and 300 top-quality diamonds are embellished on the face and reverse sides of the mahjong tiles.

That’s not all ‒ one of the dice is adorned with Burma rubies to show the numbers, and another has pave-set diamonds to represent the digits.

Used as counters, the coins in the mahjong set are also made of lavish material like black and white mother-of-pearl, with gold vermeil surrounding the borders.

The S.T. Dupont mahjong set retails at £795,000 (~S$1.2 million).

This Luxurious Mahjong Set From S.T. Dupont Is An Expensive Piece Of Handcraft Art

Chances are, those who purchased the S.T. Dupont mahjong set would not use it for playing, but rather, as an expensive home decor. While the absurd price tag of the mahjong set is not for most people, who knows if future mahjong sets released in the market will be of a similar design but kinder to our wallet.
