Supermarket Kakamu
Japan is known for all sorts of quirky designs, whether it’s fashion, beauty or lifestyle products. Case in point: memorial urn handbags. Japanese designer Kakamu Masanari has come up with a design concept, Supermarket Kakamu, that takes things to the next level.
Masanari’s designs combine everyday produce with products we use in our everyday lives. The goal of the “supermarket” is to eventually create 100 pieces of food art. There are currently 80+ items and counting, split into categories you’d usually find in different supermarket aisles, such as fruit, vegetables, dairy products, frozen food and alcohol.
Here’s a closer look at some of the more quirky products, including peanut earphones, an onion sauce plate set and edamame eyewear.
Peanut earphones
We’re all familiar with AirPods and Galaxy Buds. But what about a pair of wireless earphones that look like a peanut? Masanari’s peanut earphones have a case that looks like a peanut shell and earphones that look like actual peanuts. Hopefully, they’re not as small as real peanuts; those may be harder to find than AirPods if you drop them.
Edamame glasses
Apart from earphones, another item most people would carry around often would be their glasses or sunglasses. These edamame glasses are shaped like soybeans and come in a furry case meant to mimic an actual edamame pod. There’s no doubt that this pair of funky glasses would be a fun accessory that matches your next plate of edamame at a Japanese restaurant.

Onion sauce plates
Supermarket Kakamu’s newest design features a set of sauce plates that, when put together, looks like an onion. Just like how a real onion has multiple layers to slice through, you can “peel” this wooden onion to reveal 12 sauce plates for your next dinner party.
Sweet potato cups
If you have ever been to Japan in autumn or winter, you would know just how popular sweet potatoes are in the country during the colder seasons. These sweet potato cups are cute and great for hot drinks on a cold day, especially if you are not a fan of the starchy snack but still want to join in on the hype.

While Kakamu Masanari (left) is the “Store Manager” of Supermarket Kakamu, he does not run it alone. His younger brother, Kakamu Yuuki (right), fills the role of the supermarket’s “Deputy Store Manager”.
Masanari handles the visuals of the supermarket, which includes the design of the items, or as he calls it, “coming up with the recipes”. Yuuki, an IT engineer, is in charge of its website and other aspects of the project that do not involve the creative side.

Unfortunately, as all of the designs are simply concepts for now, they are not for sale. However, the brothers are looking to commercialise some of their popular designs through collaborations with other brands. So, we may actually get to purchase our own peanut earphones soon. In the meantime, you can take a look at the other concepts they have created over on its Supermarket Kakamu’s website or Twitter.
