Women empowerment in modern dating world
Navigating the modern dating world in the age of social media can be confusing to say the least.
To take a closer look at the changes and reasons for said shifts in love and relationships, matchmaking agency GaiGai polled several Singaporean women in a recent survey. Below, we dissect the findings about common insecurities that arise among these women alongside their contributing factors. Plus, what their new approach to dating is.
Common insecurities among women
For many women, body image, fear of inadequacy, and sincerity concerns are three common insecurities that are preventing them from falling in love.
Out of the participants, 70% of them share the same concern that men are only interested in casual dating aka the kind of situationships where there’s no strings attached and no stress. This seems to be the result of dating apps, where men tend to be looking for one-night stands. Or, they might claim to be searching for a lifelong partner, but end up ghosting after a date or two.
Then, there are 15% of women struggling with body image issues. Due to the perfectly lean and fit figures of social media models and influencers, a lot of normal women feel insecure about their bodies in comparison. This lowers their self-esteem and negatively affects their love life.
Last but not least, another 15% of participants express a fear of abandonment, rejection, and low self-esteem. This potentially stems from childhood trauma and toxic past relationships with exes, friends, and family members.
Women empowerment in dating
While insecurities continue to linger, the survey sees several changes in how Singaporean women navigate their love lives.
Instead of waiting around, women are putting themselves out there, actively searching for Mr Right, and seeking advice from dating experts. Furthermore, they’re ditching the cliche of marrying into money. In fact, there’s a 10% increase in the number of women who are happy to settle for men who make less as long as there’s love, laughter, and compatibility.

Granted, the perfect man is hard to find these days – especially when most people would rather choose the eternally unlabeled situationships over true love. However, with the shift in the female mindset, here’s to hoping that, one day, every Singaporean woman out there will eventually find the one.
