Elderly Female Mahjong Collectors
With how often Singaporeans play mahjong, it almost feels as if it’s our national sport. Living together with people of different races and cultures also means that anyone can learn how to play, even if they don’t read Chinese. But many of us never expected the game to transcend beyond Asia, especially in angmoh countries where Asians are the minority.
In Palm Springs, a city in California, a group of elderly female players have formed a group to play mahjong every week. From collecting vintage mahjong sets to making new friends and kakis, these ladies have shown us that the love for mahjong is a universal experience.
Playing mahjong overseas
The group consists of six elderly ladies who feel that mahjong “brings people together and builds community.” One of the ladies, Lise Baadh (left), the most experienced player in the group, shared that she has been playing the game for over 15 years now since her best friend in third grade was Chinese.

Their collection includes a set from Shanghai during World War II, which one of their husband’s got from his grandfather, while another purchased hers in Singapore. Lise Baadh herself owns five sets in total: a starter set, a travel set and three vintage sets.
Each of them have also snapped adorable pictures of themselves posing with their prized collection. The wide smiles on their faces tells us enough that the joy of getting a man tai zi mo truly transcends language and culture.
