Sports and high-fashion brands have come together in recent years to release much hyped-about sneakers. There was Prada x Adidas, Off-White x Nike, Nike’s Air Jordan 1 OG Dior, the list goes on. Italian luxuryValentino is about to join in the fun. The Valentino x Onitsuka Tiger collaboration will launch in selected Onitsuka Tiger stores worldwide from 17 July 2020. The good news is, Singapore’s Ngee Ann City outlet will be stocking at least one of the designs.
The sneakers were first revealed at Valentino’s fall/winter 2020 menwear show in Paris. Models dressed in black, white and navy blue ensembles accessorised their looks with white Onitsuka Tiger sneakers overlaid with the Valentino “V” logo in black.
If you’re wondering why the logo looks so familiar, it might be because you spotted your oppa Lee Min Ho wearing this Valentino jacket with a massive “VLTN” across it on an episode of The King: Eternal Monarch.
The unisex sneakers are in Onitsuka Tiger’s most iconic design, the Mexico 66. The story behind the name is that the first model was born in 1966, designed exclusively for the Japanese sports team. The shoe made its official debut at the 1968 Olympic games pretrials in Mexico.

While the runway only showcased the sneakers in white, there will be more head-turning colourways available. These include neon pink, orange and yellow.
All of these designs will have the “V” logo in black for maximum contrast. The tongue and insole sport the logos of both brands, Valentino Garavani (Valentino’s accessories arm) and Onitsuka Tiger.
The white and neon designs are said to be sold at Valentino stores.
Onitsuka Tiger stores, on the other hand, will likely be selling a limited-edition tricolour design synonymous with the Japanese brand. The sneaker body is in white leather, with the Onitsuka Tiger stripes in red and blue. The “V” logo, tongue and heel tab are in red as well.
The Tokyo 2020 Olympics might have been postponed to next year, but the many collaborations that were probably planned around it are going full steam ahead.
The Valentino x Onitsuka Tiger sneakers will be available at Onitsuka Tiger’s Ngee Ann City store from 17 July 2020. The exact designs available and retail price for the sneakers in SGD have yet to be revealed. They are, however, said to be retailing for ¥58,000 in Japan, which is equivalent to ~S$753.30.
For something slightly more wallet-friendly, the Shu Uemura x Onitsuka Tiger collection is already available in stores.
