Being A Woman In Next Life

Being a woman has many perks, like not having to go through NS, and being spoiled with a multitude of fashion choices. Apart from these reasons, there are also emotional aspects that only mothers get to experience.

As part of celebrating International Women’s Day this month, we spoke to 8 women in Singapore to gather their thoughts and reasons for still wanting to be a woman in their next life—whether it is because of the pampering they get, or simply because of how women get to wear skirts.

1. “The feeling of being a mother is indescribable”

For illustrative purposes only

“Before giving birth to my daughter, I never thought that being a woman would be so fulfilling. It might sound abstract, but having your child live inside your womb for 9 months creates this special bond. It is also one reason why I would still want to be a woman if there is a next life for me.

While it is indeed tiring to raise a child, like waking up in the middle of the night, and not getting enough sleep, I find every moment worth it. I love seeing my daughter smile and playing with toys—it just brings me so much joy.

Looking back, my mother has always been the female figure that I look up to. She has always showered me with love, supported my life decisions, and just wanted me to be happy. Hopefully, when my daughter grows up, she will feel the same for me too.”

Advice for women of the next generation: “Never doubt your worth, and know that you are full of potential.”

– Lily, 32

2. “Women have better control of their emotions”

“Although there hasn’t been a specific incident, my journey as a woman has made me realise being a woman is great.

I noticed that women have more control over their emotions—from understanding, rationalising to managing them. This has allowed most of us to stay cool-headed no matter the circumstance, and hence, make better decisions and choices. Also, we have more fashion choices and different outfits to fit the mood.

Since March is the month of celebration for International Women’s Day, I’d like to share that my mother is someone whom I look up to.

I’ve always admired her strength and resilience as a woman, and she’s not afraid to speak out and strive for what she wants. From home to office, she’s always on top of her game. At the same time, she still keeps the warmth and softness of a mother. As cliche as it sounds, I would like to be like her someday.”

Advice for women of the next generation: “Don’t short sell yourself, know your worth. You’re stronger than you think you are, more capable than you believe you are. You do you.”

– Shu Zhen, 26

3. “Many perks when it comes to dating”

For illustrative purposes only

“I feel that being a woman is a lot more fun and interesting, and these days, many are a lot more courageous and comfortable with stepping up. That’s not something you’d easily see as compared to the past.

Especially for the single ladies out there, there are many perks when it comes to dating. Most of the time, women are the ones being chased, and spoilt for choices. Although clubbing is currently not possible due to the pandemic, the club culture seems to always favour women like free drinks on ladies’ night.

I also think women are more in touch with their feelings, which yes, might mean that we’re more sensitive. However, I don’t think that is necessarily a bad thing. The more we feel, the more we’re able to reflect on ourselves.”

Advice for women of the next generation: “Women are amazing because we are the ones creating lives. Don’t be shy and let’s own it.”

– Fikah, 21

4. “Being a woman is fun and I enjoy getting spoilt for choices”

“The thought of ‘I would rather be a man’ has never crossed my mind for many reasons. I think it is very fun to be a woman thanks to the choices when it comes to fashion and beauty. Aside from those, I feel that generally women are being taken care of more than men in social and legal aspects.

For me, I find myself given similar opportunities as a man. In the past during my grandparents’ or my parents’ generation, men were the ones with more power and opportunities given. However, I am glad that I don’t feel that way in my generation.

Sometimes, I feel that men are the ones who could be at a disadvantage or treated unfairly at times in our current society. For example, being wrongly accused of indecent acts. Some women actually do take advantage of those situations.

To empower women, I feel that having more open conversations with the women within our circle is a great way to begin. This way, we can encourage each other, inspire each other, and be there for each other.”

Advice for women of the next generation: “Not just for women, but for men too—I think it is important to know that there will always be advantages and disadvantages. Whether men or women, we just have to do what we want, work and fight for it.”

– Sew, 28

5. “The hard work women go through make them strong”

For illustrative purposes only

“It is true that being a woman is difficult, like having to go through PMS and cramps, and dealing with inequalities in society. But I feel that having to go through these experiences actually makes us special and stronger than men. It is also the reason why I still want to be a woman in my next life.

The hard work that women go through, like pregnancy and giving birth, are experiences that men will never understand. It is amazing to know what women can do, and these are just the tip of the iceberg.

There are tons of female figures I look up to, but if I was to choose just one, it would be Princess Diana. I love how true she was to herself and the world, even when she wasn’t supposed to. Plus, I admire how she was the patron and president of multiple charities. Other examples also include her spreading the awareness of AIDS, battling poverty and homelessness.”

Advice for women of the next generation: “In this generation, everyone sees each other as competition, and everyone secretly wants to see one fail. My advice is to never compare yourself with other people because comparison is the thief of joy.”

– Wenn, 27

6. “I enjoy the clothing options available”

“Being a woman has many advantages, but for me, the biggest one would be fashion choices. There are so many types of apparel for women to choose from, like skirts, dresses, and rompers. Also, female clothes are cheaper, so you have to admit that is a win.

Unlike women, men only have a few options to play around with, and usually, they’d have to wear pants during formal occasions. If you think about the weather in Singapore, that’s definitely something difficult to deal with.

Also, there are many small businesses and organisations run by women, so they show how more and more women are taking up roles traditionally held by men. In a way, society is gradually shifting.

With more female leaders paving the way for a better society and placing themselves as respectable examples, I don’t see the reason to say “no” to being a woman in my next life. But rather, I feel inspired and motivated to become an inspiring one”

Advice for women of the next generation: “Believe in your potential, and don’t limit yourself based on what other people think.”

– Jou, 28

7. “I find endless inspiration in the intelligence and creativity of the women around me.”

“If I could, I would choose to be a woman again in a heartbeat. The women in my life have shown me the depths of empathy, resilience and solidarity like nothing else. The outdated stereotype that we are always competing with one another or having catfights has no place in reality. We celebrate each other’s successes, stand up for one another and reject the idea that strength has to come at someone else’s expense.

We are both soft and strong, unafraid to be vulnerable yet unbreakable in the face of adversity. I love how it’s second nature for us to care deeply for others while chasing our ambitions. We push ourselves through art, physical strength or intellectual pursuits.

I also love the community and spaces we have built—places where I feel safe, supported and free to grow. I truly enjoy embracing my femininity through dressing up, experimenting with makeup and indulging in self-care. Though gender discrimination, harassment and violence remain everyday realities, we continue to fight for change. I still feel endlessly fortunate to have experienced girlhood, and despite the struggles, I would choose it over and over again.”

– Sue Jean, 24

8. “The best part about being a woman is that you’re automatically part of this sisterhood.”

“I think the only reason I’d ever wanna be a man is to be able to pee anywhere without fear, but I love being a woman! There are only things that only we women get. I feel like the best part about being a woman is that you’re automatically part of this sisterhood.

Some of my favourite things about sisterhood include giving a pad to a girl in need without a second thought, getting ready to go out, and getting and giving compliments to one another. Also, we can experience and relate to other women through different stages of our lives, from girlhood to womanhood and even motherhood. Most women are so supportive of each other, from being able to have heart-to-heart talks anywhere and sharing our hauls or recommendations, I wouldn’t change anything, because what do men even talk about?”

– Alvinna, 24

Reasons why we’d choose to be a woman in our next lives

While being a woman has both pros and cons, these women show that they are proud of themselves, and love the lives that they are living. We hope that every woman out there will feel the same, and own the girl power that they have.

Handsome Mediacorp actors

Before cable TV became popular, Channels 8 and 5 were my go-to sources for entertainment. I fondly remember tuning in to watch local dramas starring handsome Mediacorp actors, who eventually became my celebrity crushes. Although I outgrew them as I entered my teenage years, I often find myself reminiscing about those good old times when I would swoon over these leading men.

If you were just like me, this list of handsome Mediacorp actors might just take you on a nostalgic trip down memory lane.

1. Pierre Png

Source

Even though Pierre Png has joined the 50s club, it’s no exaggeration to say that he still maintains a youthful appearance. A quick scroll through his Instagram will prove just that.

His breakthrough was in the comedy series Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd in 1999, which paved the way for his rise to fame. Since then, Pierre has starred in various Mediacorp dramas, including The Little Nyonya in 2008. His steamy shower scene in Crazy Rich Asians in 2018 had fans swooning over him, cementing his reputation as one of Singapore’s hunkiest stars.

Follow Pierre Png on Facebook and Instagram.

Hailing from China, Qi Yuwu’s claim to fame was via Star Search Singapore in 1999. He participated in the China round of Star Search, then moved to our Little Red Dot, where he was catapulted into stardom thanks to roles in Beautiful Connection and Room In My Heart. His chiselled features and toned physique are among the many reasons Yuwu’s fans find him charming.

3. Allan Wu

Source

Staying fit and looking good as a dad is no easy feat, but Allan Wu defies expectations with his ripped physique. His frequent trips to the gym underscore his passion for fitness and his self-discipline. What’s more, Allan often shares photos of his post-workout body on Instagram, causing a frenzy in the comment section every time he does so.

Even in his 40s, Elvin Ng exudes a boy-next-door vibe, so it’s not surprising that many Singaporeans have developed a crush on him.

You might recall that Elvin entered showbiz after being discovered through the talent search programme School Belle and the Beau in 2004. His bright personality and good looks naturally won him many fans, and in 2006, he was awarded one of the Top 10 Most Popular Male Artistes at the Star Awards.

I can still remember when many of my female classmates fell head over heels for him.

7. Tay Ping Hui

Source

Tay Ping Hui is a familiar name to many Singaporeans who watch Mediacorp dramas ‒ he is known for playing charismatic leading roles. If you recall, he was dubbed as an ah beng after playing Xie Donghai in Bountiful Blessings in 2012, emitting bad-boy vibes that most girls couldn’t help but love.

His good looks were recognised by various media outlets, such as Lianhe Zaobao, where he was named one of the “Top 50 Most Popular Asian Idols” for five consecutive years. If that isn’t impressive enough, the actor has also been named one of the Top 10 Most Popular Male Artistes in the Star Awards for over a decade.

Follow Tay Ping Hui on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

8. Edmund Chen

If you’re a ’90s kid, you’d know that Edmund Chen is one of the prominent Mediacorp actors who rose to fame in the 2000s. However, you might think that your eyes are playing tricks on you after learning that he actually hit the big 6-0. In fact, he turned 63 years old earlier this February.

That being said, it appears that age is just a number, seeing as how he continues to radiate a youthful vibe, and captivate his fans with his sculpted figure.

Follow Edmund Chen on Facebook and Instagram.

Elective Egg Freezing in Singapore

Sometimes I feel like it hasn’t been emphasised enough, but being a woman is tough. To kick things off, there’s the monthly menstruation, and the difficulty of conceiving if we’re past the “prime” fertility age of, like, 35. On a more positive note, Singapore has legalised elective egg freezing for females aged 21 to 37, regardless of their marital status, since July 2023 to extend the fertility shelf life of aspiring mothers.

When the law was put in place, I spoke to Patrina Tan, who recently completed a cycle of elective egg freezing to find out her reasons behind the decision, and her thoughts on conceiving.

Getting married with plans to start a family

Growing up in a big family, 33-year-old Patrina always thought that having kids was a rite of passage for her. She wanted to start her own family, and loved the idea of having a mini version of herself.

“My husband and I have known each other since secondary school, and we dated during Polytechnic before getting married with the intention of starting a family,” Patrina said.

After getting married, Patrina and her husband enjoyed their “alone” time for about two years before deciding it was time to try and conceive. She didn’t think much during the trying period, and every time she didn’t get pregnant, she thought it was just because they hadn’t been lucky enough.

However, even after some time, Patrina still didn’t get pregnant, and she and her husband went for a fertility check. The results came back with no abnormalities, and they were convinced that it was really just a matter of luck.

“I had the eggs, his sperms were working fine, my ovaries were the right size, the right environment, and everything was great,” Patrina commented.

Diagnosed with endometriosis & underwent surgery twice

For the next 6 months, Patrina and her husband continued to try for a child, but lady luck still wasn’t on their side. However, that was also when Patrina noticed that she started experiencing really bad cramps during her period.

“Since it had barely happened to me before, I went for a check-up and found out that I actually had cysts,” Patrina shared. “They were each about 3cm big, which were not life-threatening, but my gynaecologist recommended surgery to remove them since it would help me get pregnant, and I agreed.”

However, little did Patrina imagine that the surgery would be a life-altering event after waking up.

“[The doctor] didn’t tell me that he would be conducting an open surgery, and I woke up to having a 10cm scar on my abdomen,” Patrina recalled.

She blamed herself for not properly assessing the papers she signed prior to the surgery, and was disturbed to learn that she only needed a keyhole surgery after consulting a different gynaecologist 6 months later when she still didn’t get pregnant. When she returned and confronted the first gynaecologist, he dismissed her with excuses.

“I broke down emotionally because I was having such a hard time getting pregnant, and to make things worse, I now had a prominent scar on my abdomen from a surgery that was never needed in the first place,” Patrina said.

Aggravating the situation, her second gynaecologist did another scan and told Patrina that more cysts had returned, but in smaller sizes. However, since it had only been 6 months since her previous surgery, her gynaecologist suspected that Patrina might be suffering from endometriosis.

For the unacquainted, endometriosis is a condition when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus. It can lead to severe pain and make it harder for women to get pregnant.

“I decided to leave the cysts alone as they were because they were unlikely to cause an issue back then, and I was still traumatised from the previous surgery,” Patrina recounted.

Half a year later, Patrina went for her regular check-up with another new gynaecologist. This time, they discovered that there was something else other than cysts ‒ it was a 10-cm wide dermoid that had to be removed.

“I burst into tears at the clinic because I didn’t want to go through another surgery,” Patrina shared.

Thankfully, Patrina’s gynaecologist calmed her down, and explained that it would not be an open surgery, but only a keyhole surgery, which she eventually agreed to.

For the next 6 to 9 months, Patrina received medication to pause her menstruation to avoid cysts from forming. While the medication proved useful, it was also the same period when she learned that Singapore legalised egg freezing for women, regardless of marital status and medical condition.

Learning about elective egg freezing in Singapore

Before the legalisation of elective egg freezing in Singapore, it didn’t occur to Patrina that egg freezing could be a viable solution to her situation. She was emotionally and physically drained from the process of trying to conceive, and began to develop second thoughts about having kids.

“My husband isn’t forcing me to have a child, and both of us are currently at a comfortable stage,” Patrina explained. “Our lives will change completely the moment we have a child, so it makes me wonder if it will be alright to lose what we have.”

Now that elective egg freezing is legal in Singapore, Patrina sees it as a method to “extend” the shelf life of her eggs before she comes down to a final decision ‒ to have kids or not.

“I researched the egg freezing process and found a trustworthy fertility centre before signing up at Thomson Fertility Centre,” Patrina said.

She shared her thoughts with her friends and families, all of whom were very supportive of her decision, and she went ahead with the process.

Completing the egg freezing process

Similar to any other medical procedure, Patrina was scheduled to undergo a check-up before attending a consultation with a psychologist. She explained that the fertility centre needed to understand the reason behind her decision, and wanted to learn more about herself too.

“Once I received the green light from the fertility centre to proceed with elective egg freezing, they instructed me to adhere to the strict injection timings they provided,” Patrina shared.

This was because if Patrina missed any hormonal injection, even for a short while, the number of eggs that could be released would be affected.

Patrina found the first few days of her injections the hardest because it happened that her husband was away on a business trip. Having to inject the hormones by herself, she didn’t like the feeling of being alone.

Nonetheless, she pulled through and told herself that everything was going to be alright. For the next few days, she increased her dosage as instructed, after which, she returned to Thomson Fertility Centre for a check-up.

Fortunately, her womb appeared healthy, and she had to go through another week of hormonal injections before she could retrieve her eggs. When the day came, her gynaecologist was able to retrieve 13 eggs, but only 12 of them were mature, which was still considered a healthy number considering her age.

“I plan to freeze them for 3 years before I decide what I want to do with them,” Patrina commented. “If I decide not to have kids, I can choose to either discard or donate them.”

Future plans and advice

As of now, Patrina hasn’t made a choice about whether she would want to have a child because many factors come into play, such as health and age. If she decides to try for a child, she would have to later thaw her eggs and go through IVF. With egg freezing already done, Patrina mentioned that “at least half the process is already done”.

At the same time, she also understands that there is no guarantee that her eggs will be successfully fertilised, so she is trying to let things flow naturally. She will soon be heading for her next check-up, and from then on, she may be able to draw her future plans based on the results.

Her advice to couples who plan to have kids? Go for a fertility check as early as possible because it helps identify potential health issues.

“Avoid having the mindset that a baby will just be formed whenever the couple wants one,” Patrina shared.

Elective Egg Freezing Is Now A Solution For Aspiring Mothers To Extend Their Fertility Shelf Life

Patrina’s journey illustrates that even when life throws unexpected challenges your way, there is always a path forward if you persevere. As we extend our heartfelt wishes to Patrina for the best, we also hope that aspiring mothers will consider exploring options like elective egg freezing to extend the preservation of their fertility.

K-Dramas With Badass Female Leads

Being a K-drama fan for more than a decade, there’s nothing more exciting for me than noticing an increasing number of K-dramas that empower women with strong female lead characters. Instead of portraying them as damsels in distress, many of these shows also break gender stereotypes that make you wonder “Oppa who?”.

If you’re looking for some girl power to get motivated, here’s a list of K-dramas that show just how girls are much stronger and capable than we realise.

1. Yoon Jiwoo – My Name (2021)

Source

In 2021’s My Name, Yoon Jiwoo’s background is heartbreaking for many reasons ‒ she witnessed her father’s murder, was wronged as the daughter of a drug addict, and joined a mafia gang to seek vengeance for her father. During her journey to track down her father’s murderer, she narrowly escapes a sexual assault despite being drugged, which proves her deadly fighting skills.

Despite her broken self, Yoon Jiwoo also shows that she doesn’t need anyone to survive in a dog-eat-dog world.

2. Tokyo ‒ Money Heist: Korea ‒ Joint Economic Area (2022)

Source

The Korean reboot of Money Heist gave us gems like Tokyo – who’s not to be messed with as she was trained in the military in North Korea. Not only does she know how to handle ammunition, but she also proves her ability in taking control despite being in chaotic situations. Plus, she dares to go against Berlin by rounding up fellow robbers to lead a “coup”.

While her no-BS personality might have portrayed her as a cold-blooded person, she also has a soft side. During the heist, she shows concern for the injured hostages and even helps Rio to overcome his fear of blood.

3. Do Hana ‒ The Uncanny Counter (2020)

Source

Being a “counter” aka evil spirit hunter, Do Hana is capable of fighting demon-possessed humans and taking them down in 2020’s The Uncanny Counter. In contrast to her sweet appearance, she has the ability to sense evil spirits and is even skilled in mind-reading.

4. Taealha ‒ Arthdal Chronicles (2019)

Source

Taking after the orders of her father to become a spy when she was still a teenager, Taealha is a force to be reckoned with. Since Arthdal Chronicles is set in an era where male dominance is the norm, Taealha’s power-seeking bloodlust depicts how she isn’t afraid of eliminating both her adversaries and stereotypes.

5. Shim Eunseok ‒ Juvenile Justice (2022)

Source

In Juvenile Justice, Shim Eunseok is not a cold-hearted judge for no reason ‒ her son’s unjustified death made her warm nature disappear and she transforms into a workaholic who dedicates her life to convicting underaged criminals. On one occasion, she even chases after a suspect, injuring herself in the process.

While Shim Eunseok is stubborn in her belief that adults are the reason behind juvenile cases, there are times in the drama when she still reveals her motherly and vulnerable side.

6. Seo Yikang ‒ Jirisan (2021)

Not everyone is suited to be a mountain ranger as you need to have a passion for conservation efforts, a physique to conquer a mountain and strong communication skills. Known as the best Jirisan ranger, Seo Yikang impresses with her knowledge of the mountain, as well as her life-saving skills, in 2021’s Jirisan.

As the plot of the drama thickens with mysterious deaths taking place on Jirisan, Seo Yikang begins to investigate with a rookie ranger, displaying her curious and bold nature. We have no choice but to stan a dauntless female lead.

7. Seo Hyeseung ‒ Remarriage & Desires (2022)

Source

One focal character in Remarriage & Desires is Seo Hyeseung – a changed woman ever since her ex-husband was caught having an affair. The latter even committed suicide after he was wrongly accused with no one believing his words.

In an attempt to clear her ex-husband’s name, Seo Hyeseung finds herself in the competitive world of the elite where marriages mean nothing except business and money. She later realises that things have to be done sneakily and even learns to manipulate people for her own good.

Inspired by crime shows when she was young, Jeong Taeeul became an inspector within the violent crime division of the National Police Agency. Her strong will and never-say-die attitude lead her to life-threatening conflicts against mafia gangs ‒ something that not all inspectors dared to do.

Adding to Jeong Taeeul’s inspirational character, she even stopped a group of bullies from hurting an innocent classmate when she was a student. Her constant belief in standing up for the weak made us look up to her even more.

Ahn Goeun might be doing a mundane, administrative job at the Rainbow Taxi Company in Taxi Driver, but she transforms into a skillful hacker whenever duty calls. What’s so admirable about her is that she learned the skill in an attempt to erase her dead sister’s sex tape which was circulating on the internet.

As she helps the innocent alongside the Rainbow Taxi team, she also rides a sleek motorbike which all the more shows off her badass character.

Graceful Family’s Mo Seokhee shows her absolute boss personality when she went behind bars for a short period of time. Despite entering the female-only prison for a couple of days, Seokhee establishes her powerful image easily so no one dares to mess with her.

Plus, she also hates when the strong bully the weak, explaining why she stands up for an inmate who is being tormented by another inmate.

11. Jo Yiseo ‒ Itaewon Class (2020)

Source

Jo Yiseo is not your typical K-drama female lead as she is reckless, lacking in empathy, and blunt in her words. However, that doesn’t mean she is a bad person as her sociopath traits later allowed viewers to witness her growth in the drama.

Her high IQ of 162 also plays a part in her ingenious business strategies for Dan Bam, a restaurant opened by Park Saeroyi, which eventually overtakes the food conglomerate that had been a long-time rival of the latter.

If you thought When The Camellia Blooms is another typical K-drama about romance, wait till you watch the first episode ‒ Oh Dongbaek will change your mind in a heartbeat. Her backstory of growing up as an orphan, her role as a single mother, and being the owner of a bar named Camellia in a small village is instantly hook-worthy.

While Dongbaek settles in the village alongside facing groundless rumours spread by nosy ahjummas, she is targeted by a serial killer. Instead of hiding and closing down her bar, she chooses to face the potential danger and refuses to let anyone bring her down.

13. Kang Saebyeot ‒ Squid Game (2021)

Source

Here’s a character most of us would be familiar with. If it wasn’t already tough to defect from North to South Korea, Squid Game’s Kang Saebyeot was scammed by a broker who demanded more money in order to bring her mother in. Rather than succumbing to his unreasonable request, she threatens him with a knife against his throat ‒ a move that not anyone can pull off.

In contrast to her fearless nature, she also cares for her younger brother by promising that she will find a solution to bring their mother to South Korea to lead a better life.

To stay alive in a dystopian future set in Sisyphus: The Myth, Gang Seohye picks up survival skills like fighting and handling combat arms through merciless and fierce warlords. In an attempt to save the earth from destruction, she time-travelled to the present to keep Han Taesul alive, protecting him from unforeseen danger ‒ even if it means never seeing her family again.

From escaping from the protagonists to saving the life of Han Taesul, Gang Seohye serves as a selfless character and never bows down to evil.

Source

It is normal to lose your cool after discovering your spouse is cheating on you. But rather than being hysterical, Gong Mari makes her husband pay for his adultery ‒ by never agreeing to a divorce so that he will suffer for the rest of his life.

Through various comedic and creative ideas, Gong Mari’s strategy to stay married to her husband turns out to work, and it suggests that you never know the outcome of situations unless you give it a try. A word of advice? Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.

These K-Dramas Prove The Power That Females Hold

These K-dramas showcases the power that females hold like taking the lead in a male-dominated society, and getting even with a disloyal husband who was caught having an affair.

On top of seeing more K-dramas gearing towards such a female-empowering route, we hope that they will also be able to inspire younger females to take charge of their lives.

Wedding Planning Tips

Since I was a young girl, I’ve always fantasised about my wedding, inspired by Cinderella and Prince Charming. But now that I’m planning my own, I finally understand why couples get so stressed about the process. The choices can be overwhelming, especially when deciding between a wedding package and a DIY approach.

While opting for a wedding package for your big day is quite the norm these days, it often comes with a higher cost despite saving time and effort. On the other hand, putting together your wedding by yourself has its advantages too. You get to piece together your dream wedding, and have much more freedom and control over the budget.

That being said, I spoke to five brides-to-be to learn the tips they have when it comes to DIY-ing a wedding.

1. “Explore thrift stores for hidden gems”

For illustrative purposes only

“My fiance and I are getting married later this December 2024, and we have agreed on a budget of around $30,000. Since we want to splurge a little more on our honeymoon, we prefer to save on the decor as much as possible.

One thing we did was explore thrift stores for hidden gems because we wanted the wedding to be one-of-a-kind. Considering our love for bohemian aesthetics, we managed to find a few interesting trinkets that go well with the theme to display on our reception table. Plus, we used artificial flowers as decorations, saving us a lot of money compared to using fresh flowers.

You never know what you might chance upon so I highly recommend visiting thrift stores ‒ many items still look presentable and come with an affordable price tag.”

– Nat, 28

2. “Create a mood board for easier wedding planning”

For illustrative purposes only

“It is easy to get overwhelmed by every detail when you’re DIY-ing a wedding. As such, my way of making sure that I’m on the right track is to create a mood board to simplify the wedding planning process.

I compiled images with the theme and colour palette that I envisioned before reaching out to wedding vendors, and shared with them the overall vibe I wanted for my wedding. By doing so, those involved in the wedding planning process, such as my bridesmaids, were all on the same page, picking up decorations and suggesting ideas based on my creative direction.

For illustrative purposes only
Source, source

One other method that I found helpful was using the AI features available on my Samsung phone. For instance, I was able to find a similar Chinese traditional hair piece I had seen online by circling the object on a reference picture, and using the Circle to Search with Google function to look for those available for sale online ‒ whether from Carousell or Shopee.

Since it also provided me with additional information on the meaning behind a hair piece at a wedding, I found it meaningful to learn more about my culture as well.

Online shopping helps save a lot of money, and you even have the option of a refund if the products do not meet your expectations. While it requires more effort to search for items within your budget, it ensures that you’re not overspending.”

– Kai Xuan, 30

3. “Join Telegram groups to get firsthand information on wedding vendors”

“Even though my wedding is only happening in six months, I don’t think the preparation will ever end because I’m afraid of missing out on minor details. As of now, I have yet to complete tasks such as purchasing the wedding bands, choosing the wedding favours, and planning the actual day activities. I believe I won’t be “resting” until the wedding actually happens.

Thankfully, I find joining Telegram groups really helpful because you get firsthand information on wedding vendors from former brides. They share tips on the dos and don’ts, and also identify the red flags to look out for when choosing vendors.

As a word of advice to fellow brides-to-be, I’d suggest setting aside a clear budget, and sticking to it because the costs add up. Most importantly, enjoy the process and don’t stress too much!”

– Gwen, 29

4. “Note down the things you enjoy DIY-ing”

“My wedding is happening near the beach this November, which is something that I have always envisioned because I wanted a pet-friendly location. So far, I’ve booked vendors such as photographers, videographers, and makeup artists. I foresee myself finishing up the planning within the next two months or so.

When it comes to DIY-ing a wedding, I think it is important to focus on the things you enjoy doing. This makes the process easier, and more enjoyable.

For instance, my interest lies in video editing, so I created my video montage. Not only does this allow me to input my creative ideas, but it also gives me control over how I want my wedding to be.

However, for areas like flower decor, I prefer to engage a vendor just because they are professionals, and I trust that they know what they are doing.”

– Maia, 31

5. “Don’t feel the need to get a wedding bundle”

Image for illustrative purposes only

“My fiance and I considered going through the ROM process only, as everything in Singapore is so expensive. We wanted to spend as little as possible and save the money for other things like housing. However, as I talked to more people, I began to understand the appeal of a traditional wedding, and I decided to have a church ceremony.

With that in mind, we have a budget of $15,000 for our wedding ‒ not a lot compared to what you typically hear from others. Currently, I have settled the flower arrangements by DIY-ing them using fabric, which cost me slightly more than $300. I also bought my wedding gown from Carousell for $60, which is much cheaper than renting from a bridal shop.

It is possible to have a budget wedding, and you don’t need to get a wedding bundle just because of people’s expectations. Go for the decor that is unique to your wedding, and enjoy the process!”

– Jeslene, 26

Remember To Enjoy The Wedding Planning Process

Through the responses shared by the brides-to-be mentioned above, they remind us that no matter how stressful or tiring the wedding planning journey might be, we should remember to enjoy the process. After all, we only get to do so once in a lifetime.

Planning A Wedding Can Be Simplified With AI-Powered Galaxy S24 Ultra

For smooth wedding planning, consider using the Galaxy S24 Ultra, one of the first AI smartphones. You might be impressed by how effortless it is with the help of its AI-powered features and Singtel’s strong network connectivity.

Source

To start, the Note Assist function helps summarise your running notes into a checklist. It prevents you from missing any wedding planning details, such as including yourself in the guest count and coming up with a backup plan for wet weather conditions.

All you have to do is select a passage via the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s in-built S-Pen or your finger, and hit the “Summarise” button. Easy peasy. Plus, with Singtel’s 5G connectivity, you can instantly share your checklist with your partner or wedding planner, ensuring everyone stays updated.

Source

On the other hand, the Circle to Search with Google function comes in handy, especially when you want to look for certain items online and learn more about them.

Take dress hunting for your bridesmaids as an example. Instead of going through the trouble of browsing online shop after shop, simply search for one that catches your eye by circling the dress with the S-Pen. After all, the final stretch of wedding preparation is crunch time, so another time-saving hack is to use a high-speed connection for instant search results, saving you valuable time.

P.S.: Circle to Search with Google also works when you trace an item with your finger.

Let’s face it ‒ communicating in a language that you barely know is a struggle. If you’re looking to save costs by outsourcing wedding services abroad, you can make use of its Chat Assist and Live Translate features to overcome language barriers in real-time.

Since having stable connectivity is essential for seamless communication, especially when conversing with someone in a foreign language, the Galaxy S24 Ultra offers a solution with Singtel’s reliable connection. It allows you to effortlessly express yourself without breaking up in the call, as if having an interpreter in your hands.

Memories are meant to be made and shared at weddings, and the Galaxy S24 Ultra is designed to capture the most precious moments. Equipped with a 200MP main camera, 5x Camera Optical Zoom and a 50mp high-resolution sensor, the device takes sharp, clear images and 8K videos you’ll want to cherish for a lifetime.

If you’re wondering where the AI feature comes into play, you might be surprised to learn that AI helps to enhance the details between the pixels. Even if you choose to zoom up to 100x, you’ll still be able to snap a clear photo from afar.

This way, everyone can be part of your special day, no matter where they are.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra further enhances this experience with its long battery life, so you won’t have to worry about charging your phone halfway through the wedding. It allows you to watch up to 30 hours of videos and listen to music for up to 95 hours ‒ that’s almost 4 consecutive days.

Deliveroo Rider Mum

In 2019, while the ongoing pandemic has cost many their livelihoods, it was also a blessing in disguise for people like Norhidayah, who went from being a bar singer to an online streamer and Deliveroo rider.

Despite going through many ups and downs juggling multiple jobs, Norhidayah has managed to overcome her initial struggles, and appreciates her family of 6 even more. Read on to find out more about the 37-year-old’s story.

Starting singing live at bars when she was 18

Believe it or not, Norhidayah didn’t know she could sing until she joined a talent competition in school when she was 17. She even ranked amongst the top 5, which is impressive considering how she had never received any training.

The experience ignited her passion for singing, and Norhidayah, who was then waitressing at a bar with a live band, thought about making a living out of it.

While Norhidayah wasn’t fated to work as a singer at that bar, she managed to secure a job at another bar ‒ this dream-come-true moment happened when she put in her application just as the lead singer of that bar resigned. The timing was spectacular, and it was no doubt life-changing.

Soon enough, Norhidayah embarked on her singing career as a singer in several bars, which was unfortunately disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic in 2019.

How COVID forced her to start online streaming

If working as a performing artist wasn’t already hard enough, imagine how Norhidayah felt when the Covid-19 pandemic took out Singapore’s nightlife. The bars where she was working had to close temporarily, and she needed to find another way to make ends meet, in order to support her family of 6, comprising her husband, mother, parents-in-law, and stepson.

As the saying goes: “When one door closes, another opens”, Norhidayah’s singing career was given a new lease of life when she chanced upon a streaming site, Bigo. The online streaming platform allowed her to earn money while she performed at home – to audiences from around the world.

“It was slightly awkward at the start because I couldn’t hear the applause after I sang a song,” Norhidayah shared, “my audience could only send messages to me through the chat, and it felt like a one-way interaction.”

Despite the initial awkwardness, it didn’t take long for Norhidayah to get used to the environment and her audience, who later turned into loyal viewers. Most of them are from neighbouring countries like Malaysia and Indonesia.

“I sing mostly English songs, but I have also received song requests from my viewers who asked me to sing Indonesian songs,” Norhidayah commented.

Noticing that she was slowly gaining a following on Bigo, she began to put more effort into her streaming sessions, like decorating her room to make her “stage” look nicer.

Each streaming session lasts for 2 hours, from 5pm to 7pm. But there was once when she extended it by an hour as it was her birthday, and she wanted to celebrate it with her viewers.

There’s no denying that Norhidayah enjoyed working on Bigo, but she soon realised that she needed more money to cover her family’s expenses. Eventually, she applied to be a Deliveroo rider, which allowed her to continue her work as an online streamer.

Why she chose to join Deliveroo to earn extra income

As someone who has to juggle taking care of their family and working as a second job, Norhidayah finds Deliveroo’s flexible working hours attractive.

Unlike other food delivery companies, Deliveroo caters to an individual’s schedule, so they don’t require a commitment to specific working hours, as Norhidayah pointed out. This means she gets to work as a Deliveroo rider around her online streaming hours.

“If you have any urgent matter, you can complete the order you have on hand ASAP, before you go and deal with it,” she shared. “Once you’re done, you’re free to return to delivering food.”

Adding on to this, she also prefers Deliveroo’s incentive system, which allows her to earn extra money when she takes on deliveries that are made past midnight.

Challenges faced when juggling between work and taking care of her family

As ideal as her job as a Deliveroo rider might sound, Norhidayah has had her fair share of struggles when it comes to juggling work and taking care of her family.

Currently, Norhidayah streams from 5pm to 7pm on weekdays, before taking a short dinner break. She later begins her food delivery job, which lasts 6 to 7 hours before returning home in the wee hours of the morning, at around 3am ‒ she only hits the bed in the morning before her husband leaves for work.

Fortunately, Norhidayah is blessed with an understanding husband, who helps to take care of the family when she is working ‒ he only wakes her up at around 10am when he needs to leave for work. But this means the responsibility of taking care of the elderly folk at home, and her stepson, falls on her once her husband heads out.

Apart from doing the remaining household chores in the day, Norhidayah often explains to her parents-in-law about her online streaming job. They don’t quite understand how it works, and she has to assure them that she is indeed earning enough to put food on the table.

“I also try to spend time with my stepson once he returns from school,” Norhidayah explained. “Since there isn’t much time before I start work, we usually have dinner together and I will ask about his day.”

Sharing more about her 14-year-old stepson, Norhidayah is grateful that he isn’t clingy like other kids, as he understands that she needs to support the family.

Besides having such understanding family members, Norhidayah also has close friends who look out for her.

“They told me that I am working too hard and I should only focus on one job,” Norhidayah shared. “But I told them that’s not possible because there will be days when I need extra money for urgent matters.”

No matter how hard things are, Norhidayah is grateful that her family and friends are her biggest supporters, and acknowledges that they are the ones who give her strength. Although her situation isn’t the most ideal, it is inspiring that she manages to find a silver lining amidst it all.

Working as a Deliveroo rider: the good, the bad and the ugly

Ever since Norhidayah became a mother, it has come to her realisation that she nags, and gets triggered by little things. However, after starting work as a Deliveroo rider, the experience has taught her lessons of patience and perseverance.

There have been days when she was on the receiving end of impatient customers, but instead of feeling offended, the incidents inspired her to embrace patience and empathy. She learned to put herself in the shoes of those customers and be understanding of their frustrations.

Furthermore, being patient has also helped her deal with waiting for food delivery orders. Previously, she used to always be in a hurry, since more orders means more money. But she realised that she has to just go with the flow, as nothing good comes of being anxious.

The change in her behaviour wasn’t subtle, as even her stepson pointed out that she had changed.

“He told me I was nagging less at him,” Norhidayah joked.

Besides the life lessons, Norhidayah recalled a heartwarming story of an encounter she had with a customer, which touched her heart.

“I was delivering food around midnight, and the customer was surprised to learn that I was a woman when he received the food,” she shared. “He asked me why I was out so late in the middle of the night.”

It turned out that the customer was concerned for Norhidayah’s safety, and told her that she should go home, as it was not safe to be out alone at night. Although she mentioned that she still needed to make several food deliveries to hit her target, the customer ended up giving her a $50 tip to cover those extra rounds.

Norhidayah was touched by his sincerity and concern for her, and was grateful to know that there are kind people around. As difficult and tiring it is to work as a Deliveroo rider, it is these heartwarming experiences that motivate Norhidayah to work harder.

When Singapore’s nightlife reopened in mid-April 2022, Norhidayah was more than happy to return to singing live in bars ‒ 3 of her workplaces invited her to come back and sing for them.

That said, Norhidayah didn’t quit her online streaming gig, even though she has her original job back. Now, she streams herself using her phone while she sings live in bars.

“My viewers understand that when I work in bars I won’t be able to interact as much with them,” she explained. “Most of them send me supportive messages and express themselves by sending me hearts.”

Sharing about her plans for the future, Norhidayah doesn’t plan on quitting Deliveroo as she feels that she is coping well with her multiple jobs, although she will put more effort into spending time with her family, and working towards a better work-life balance.

Her advice to those who are struggling to make ends meet: “There will be hiccups along the way, but it will work out.” She has seen people who have managed to rise up against the odds, and encouraged others to never give up.

Same-Sex Wedding Overseas

As a Singaporean who grew up in the country, I’d say without hesitation that Singapore is a great place to study, work, and start a family unless you belong to the LGBTQ community. While there’s no denying that Singapore has become more progressive over the years, it still has a long way to go when it comes to recognising same-sex marriage and family, and addressing housing problems that the community faces.

I spoke to Josiah, a 29-year-old Singaporean who recently moved to Canada and got married to his partner of 5 years there. Below, he shares the challenges he encountered when planning a same-sex wedding overseas, and his thoughts on Singapore and the LGBTQ community.

Getting to know and date his then-boyfriend

It all began in 2017 when Josiah went on holiday to Vancouver ‒ he met Jared through a dating app, and they hung out for a quick sushi date before going their separate ways. While they didn’t establish any sort of relationship at that point in time, they kept in touch with each other.

“It doesn’t hurt to make friends from around the world,” Josian shared. “The following year, I was in university, and thought about going on a solo trip to the U.S. and Canada so I reached out to Jared again.”

As Josiah planned to stay a week in Canada, Jared offered to let him stay in his place, and it was during their second encounter that Josiah developed feelings for Jared. Before leaving the country, Josiah confessed to Jared, but he knew that nothing would change because he needed to return to university, while Jared had just started a new job.

“It’s just the right person, but maybe the wrong time, and the wrong place,” Josiah said.

Things took a dramatic turn in 2019 when Josiah and Jared exchanged New Year’s wishes through text.

“I could tell that Jared was slightly drunk, and he had friends over at this place,” Josiah recalled. “Out of the blue, he texted, “Let’s just get married. I don’t need anyone else. I just want you.” ‒ I was shocked.”

As if a scene straight out of a rom-com film, Josiah immediately called Jared after seeing his declaration of love. He asked what Jared meant, and they had an in-depth chat about it before deciding to start a long-distance relationship.

Moving to Canada & getting proposed to during a concert

For a long time, Josiah’s family and friends knew that he never wanted to settle in Singapore, so it wasn’t much of a surprise when he broke the news that he planned to move to Canada. Instead, they were supportive of his decision.

“Singapore was never the end game,” Josiah said. “I’ve never dreamed of owning a BTO or having kids in Singapore. So, for me, it was always about moving overseas.”

After the borders reopened in Singapore and Canada in 2021, Josiah made a couple of trips to Vancouver to visit Jared ‒ once, even staying there for as long as six months.

During Josiah’s next visit in August 2022, Jared proposed to him at The Weeknd’s concert.

“It wasn’t a grand proposal,” Josiah shared. “We were both sitting down, and he said, “Let’s get married.””

Despite the absence of romantic flowers and a tear-jerking speech, Josiah was satisfied with the proposal, knowing that he too wanted to spend the rest of his life with Jared.

He could envision himself moving to Vancouver since he found it similar to Australia, where he did his undergraduate studies. Not only was there a large Asian community, but Josiah also had family members living in Canada. The decision was a no-brainer for Josiah.

Before Josiah returned to Singapore, the couple went to secure their engagement rings, which later also doubled as their wedding bands.

Having an unconventional wedding in Canada

A wedding is the celebration of love between two people, and Josiah had always fantasised about his as a party where guests would go, “Holy sh*t, that was so fun!” ‒ nothing like a traditional hotel wedding.

“I just want my guests to have fun, and make the occasion memorable,” Josiah shared.

That being said, Josiah and Jared decided to have their wedding at L’Abattoir, a restaurant they visited right before they attended that fateful The Weeknd concert.

“The restaurant has a private dining room that allows intimate weddings for around 50 people,” Josiah explained. “It fits our budget, and we had previously tried their food, so everything was perfect.”

Having a large wedding was never on Josiah’s mind, and he was very pleased with the space the restaurant provided, particularly because he wanted to talk and connect with every guest. Josiah and Jared even decided on a blue theme, and on the day of the wedding, their guests showed up in blue dresses and suits.

Compared to weddings we normally see in Singapore, Josiah explained that it is not a must for guests to give angpaos to the couple. Instead, guests can gift the couple practical items such as electronic appliances as listed on the couple’s gift registry. To put it simply, “Canadian weddings are much more chill, and not so uptight.”

In terms of the cost of the wedding, Josiah and Jared spent around $40,000, which included booking the venue, food, flowers, and customising their suits.

“We were able to save on our rings because we “reused” our engagement rings as wedding bands,” Josiah elaborated.

Challenges faced when planning the wedding

Josiah and Jared got married in July 2023

Usually unheard of in a Singaporean context, Josiah and Jared didn’t face any external challenges when planning their wedding, especially since Canada recognises the union between same-sex couples. They were even able to source vendors who had experience with gay weddings, unlike LGBTQ+ couples in Singapore, who struggle to even find venues for same-sex ceremonies to celebrate their love.

You might recall that in 2022, one hotel in Singapore was under fire for allegedly discriminating against same-sex couples.

“It was slightly difficult for me to coordinate and call some of the vendors since I was in Singapore for a few months after getting engaged,” Josiah said. “However, it was still manageable.”

Instead, the biggest challenge Josiah faced had nothing to do with the actual wedding planning itself ‒ he wasn’t able to get his parents to attend his wedding ceremony.

“They were okay with me being gay, but I think for the wedding, it took some time for them to come around,” Josiah said. “But, unfortunately, not in time for the wedding.”

Nonetheless, their absence was filled by Josiah’s brother and chosen family, which consisted of 16 friends who supported him through thick and thin. They flew across the Pacific Ocean to celebrate this joyous occasion.

Luckily, Jared’s mother understood where Josiah’s parents were coming from, and she stepped into the role of a mother during the wedding ceremony. He was grateful that she was more than willing to help out, especially during the planning process.

When asked about the current relationship between Josiah and his parents, he revealed that they met Jared when they flew to Vancouver for a holiday several months after their wedding. They even brought a custom leather valet with Jared’s name engraved.

“I’d say things have greatly improved now,” Josiah said.

Future plans as a couple and advice to others

To add on to the good news, Josiah recently received his permanent residency in Canada, and will no longer have to rely on his tourist visa.

“It’s great since I don’t want to be a tourist forever,” Josiah commented. “I want to have access to healthcare and insurance, and open up bank accounts.”

On the other hand, he also considered holding a small party in Singapore to celebrate his marriage for those who couldn’t attend the wedding in Canada. It would be a great opportunity to catch up with his loved ones, and allow his parents to be part of the celebration.

As a word of advice to LGBTQ couples in Singapore who plan to get married one day, Josiah thinks that they should do it on their own terms.

“One of the things that people always talk about when it comes to weddings is “My parents are paying for half of it, I have to listen to what they want”,” Josiah shared.

Instead, he believes that the couple should do what they want, and go for the concept and ideas that they dream about. After all, it is their moment.

That being said, he understands that since Singapore doesn’t recognise gay marriages, some LGBTQ couples prefer to tie the knot overseas. However, not all of them have the luxury of affording a destination wedding, and he believes that Singapore still has room for improvement when it comes to recognising same-sex marriages.

“What if I get injured one day in Singapore, and Jared tells the hospital that he is my husband?” Josiah said. “They’d probably think that Jared is crazy although we’re a legally married couple in Canada.”

With that said, Josiah can only hope that Singapore will become more inclusive as time goes on.

Josiah’s Story Shows That Singapore Can Do Better For The LGBTQ Community

For most Singaporeans, signing the ROM and getting married in the presence of our loved ones seem to be something we take for granted. Unfortunately, these are not recognised in Singapore yet for those who belong to the LGBTQ community.

Hopefully, through Josiah’s story, more awareness will be raised about the obstacles that the LGBTQ community encounters, fostering empathy and promoting positive change in Singapore.

Baby Express Singapore

Most teenagers deal with concerns like friendship issues or stress from homework, and the last thing on their minds would be raising a child. Not for Stacy Chow, who found out about her teenage pregnancy at just 17 years old.

With a lack of financial support and only her family to lean on, Stacy went through a tough time not only raising her firstborn, but also eliminating the stereotypes of being a school dropout. At 36 today, she is a proud mother of four kids and the boss of breast pump company, Baby Express.

Ahead, she shares with us her inspirational story and her aim to change the societal views on breastfeeding.

Getting pregnant at 17 and struggling as a mother

Stacy celebrating her 21st birthday with her son

Finding out that you’re pregnant at 17 years old would be a shocker for anyone, especially if you just dropped out of school. Instead of sharing the news with her friends, Stacy stayed mostly at home as she feared the stigma of teenage pregnancy. As such, only her parents knew about her secret.

“Since I was quite petite, not many people could tell that I was pregnant unless I shared it with them,” Stacy recalled.

While enduring judgement from strangers was one thing on her mind, Stacy was also worried about her future. Since she didn’t come from a well-off family, financial security was another huge concern.

3 months after giving birth, Stacy took up part-time jobs, one of which was being a cashier that required her to work from 9pm to 7am. She was willing to sacrifice her sleep and gave everything she could in exchange for a better life for her son. As she worked to raise her family, her parents took care of her son overnight.

Her experience with breastfeeding

Raising a child in a fast-paced society like Singapore is no easy feat, and Stacy struggled with finding the best way to do so without burning a hole in her pocket. As she couldn’t afford to feed her son with formula milk that costs around $80 per tin, breastfeeding was the only way to go.

Yet, it was easier said than done.

For the unacquainted, not every mother is suitable to breastfeed their child. Some females’ breasts would swell, suffer from infection, and even harden. This also means the milk produced won’t be the best for the baby’s consumption. For Stacy, she would also have to start a clean diet to lactate in the best condition. Simply put, breastfeeding is more than just the squeezing motion.

An example of a breast pump that costs over $600
Source

Thankfully, Stacy was able to lactate smoothly but to make things more efficient, she would require a breast pump. However, she was once again at crossroads as the breast pumps on the market cost around $500, and the decent ones retailed at more than $1,000 ‒ they were way over her budget.

“I was also having a hard time because there was a lack of information for new mothers on breastfeeding,” Stacy pointed out. Note that the year was 2005, which also meant that the internet was not as in-depth as it is today.

Whatever knowledge Stacy acquired was through the help of nurses ‒ there were also no lactation specialists or consultants she could refer to. What’s worse? Some of the information she received was even misleading.

Eventually, this motivated her to start her own breast pump company which would introduce an affordable design and educate new mothers with accurate information on breastfeeding.

Starting her own breast pump business and the challenges faced

Stacy with her breast pumps for Baby Express

Everything began to slowly fall into place when Stacy continued to look for affordable breast pumps in Singapore. When she realised there was none, she decided to bring in overseas brands and liaise with local manufacturers.

As Stacy was already keen on coming up with an affordable breast pump, it was a heaven-sent invitation when one manufacturer asked her to fine-tune their designs.

“There were many other manufacturers which were actually keen on making the “right” breast pump, as they didn’t have much knowledge,” Stacy revealed.

For context, traditional breast pumps are bulky, noisy, and only work when plugged into an electric socket. To add, there are a lot of tubes and wires that restrict the movement of the mother. This means they would have to sit in the same position for about 30 minutes to an hour for a single breast pumping session.

Taking note of these common problems from her firsthand experiences, Stacy knew the changes she had to make in order to come up with a breast pump design that would benefit all mothers.

After some tweaks and trials, Stacy later started Baby Express in 2019 with a capital of $2,000 that came from her child’s angbao money. The journey as an entrepreneur wasn’t easy, as Stacy didn’t have any experience in running a business, and she needed extra hands to handle things like marketing and logistics.

“Thankfully, I had friends who were willing to lend me a helping hand and shared tips about being a business owner,” Stacy mentioned.

With all the help and support she could get, Baby Express finally launched their affordable breast pump that retails at $89.90. Unlike traditional breast pumps, Stacy’s designs were lighter, noiseless, portable, and also rechargeable.

“The breast pumps are designed for working mothers by a working mother,” Stacy emphasised during our meeting.

Since optimal breast pumping is every 3 hours, working mothers appreciated how the design came in handy thanks to the light and portable feature. Through word-of-mouth and reviews by satisfied customers, Stacy soon found Baby Express making a name for itself.

Today, Baby Express runs with a headcount of eight, and they even have their own warehouse and office. That’s not all ‒ Stacy established connections with four baby product retailers and now, they each have a section retailing her breast pumps too.

Rather than calling it a success, Stacy humbly shared that Baby Express is still in the process of taking flight.

Her aims to change the views on breastfeeding

Stacy with her mother and four children

In her journey as a business owner and a mother of four, Stacy developed a new perspective on breastfeeding over time. Despite manufacturing her own breast pumps, Stacy actually didn’t breastfeed all her children due to several issues, and there were times when she felt like a failure as a mother for not doing so.

“I was affected by how the older generations kept talking about the “special bond” between mother and child during breastfeeding,” Stacy explained. “It was as if they were hinting that I wasn’t trying hard enough when I fed my children with formula milk.”

However, looking back now, Stacy realised that she didn’t have to feel that way because breastfeeding was indeed difficult. Also, how mothers choose to feed their children is no one’s business but theirs.

While Stacy agreed that society is slowly changing for the better, there are many who still view breastfeeding and breast pumping in public as “unsightly”. This outdated mindset also believes that such actions should be done behind closed doors.

When asked what message she has for those who think that way, Stacy shares that she hopes they would better understand mothers as sometimes they simply don’t have a choice. Adding on, she suggests that the best anyone could do was to try and understand where mothers are coming from and to respect them.

“Breast pumping every three hours is actually highly recommended, as missing the timeline would result in swelling of the breasts and leaking,” Stacy explained. “Many mothers also carry a lot of barang barang like breast pumps, towels, and an extra set of clothes just in case they stain themselves.”

Getting certified as a postpartum advisor

Apart from being a mother and a business owner, there is actually more to Stacy’s identity. From having no lactation consultant during her first pregnancy 17 years ago, she is now one herself, and is currently working her way to becoming a certified postpartum advisor as well.

For those new to the term, postpartum advisors take care of the physical and emotional recovery of mothers, and help to answer questions that they might have after delivery. Plus, they also provide resources to those who suffer from postpartum depression. To put it simply, they could be seen as “fairy godmothers” for mothers.

As her course is online-based, Stacy makes use of whatever time she has before, between, or after work to squeeze in some studying.

Currently, there are only around 50 certified postpartum advisors in Singapore and not many Singaporeans actually know they exist. Upon completion of the course, Stacy hopes to contribute even more by sharing her knowledge and providing proper information for expecting mothers.

Future plans and tips for new mothers

While closing sales for Baby Express is one thing, Stacy’s ultimate goal for her career is to change the views of breastfeeding and breast pumping. She plans to also have her staff undergo postpartum training. This way, her staff would then know how to help customers who also have questions about breastfeeding and postpartum so they won’t have to spend extra money to consult a professional.

With some parting words, Stacy shares, “I hope that others would have a better understanding of the hardships mothers go through like breastfeeding, and that accurate information on postpartum gets passed on”.

“Expecting and new mothers should know that there are now many support groups in Singapore like Breastfeeding Mothers’ Support Group. Instead of going through difficult times alone, there are others who are always ready to help”, Stacy concluded.

Stacy’s Story Shows That Motherhood Comes With A Lot Of Sacrifice & Hardship

Stacy’s story shows her tenacity of working her way up from a teenage school dropout to become a proud mother of 4 and business owner. While I’m not a mother myself, our conversation allowed me to gain a newfound respect for all mothers. Motherhood sure comes with a whole lot of difficulties, but Stacy’s experience gives others assurance that every cloud has a silver lining.

Being Business Partners As A Couple

Most couples would avoid running a business together for many reasons. Potential arguments, eroding relationships, blurred lines in dynamics … the list goes on. But at the same time, it is ideal for some as they would already have a good understanding of their partner. To put it simply, it is really a hit or miss.

For Gabriel and Zoey, the couple didn’t have a choice but to become business partners, after Gabriel suffered from a scam and fell deep in debt. The only solution for them to survive and pay off the debt? Start a business, which eventually led to where they are now, successful as both entrepreneurs and parents.

How they met and fell in love

Before diving into the hardship that Gabriel and Zoey went through, let’s rewind to the beginnings of their love story. Their relationship blossomed after meeting in a club ‒ Zoey was 17 and pursuing a diploma in polytechnic, whereas Gabriel was 19 and already working as a salesperson after dropping out of polytechnic.

With an age difference of only 2 years and as believers who shared the same faith, the two fell in love quickly. After dating for 4 years, the two tied the knot, and as of now, have been together for 10 years and recently celebrated their 6th year of marriage. Their blissful marriage was further blessed after Zoey gave birth to their daughter.

While their relationship might seem picture-perfect, it wasn’t always a sweet life due to a scam job Gabriel held.

Being scammed, losing their job and becoming unemployed

On the surface, everything was rosy for Gabriel career-wise. After dropping out of polytechnic, he worked his way up to lead a team of 100 employees as the top salesperson in a company. It was only in the 5th year did he realise that the company was not running a legitimate business model.

Despite discovering the truth, Gabriel couldn’t leave the company for many reasons ‒ he continued vouching for the company and could not admit to the world that he was in the wrong as well.

“I didn’t have the courage to just quit my job,” Gabriel recalled.

Eventually, he stayed on for 2 more years before he decided that “it had to stop and [he] wanted to set things straight”, even if it meant losing everything. His departure was not well-received by the company, even leading to death threats from people involved.

As soon as Gabriel left the company, he fell deep in debt that amounted to a 6-figure sum, resulting from having to repay the people who invested in the company. At 23, most of us would be starting to earn an income, so it’s hard to imagine how Gabriel felt owing so much money at that age.

“It was very tough since I wasn’t able to receive any financial help. My father had retired and my mother had already passed on,” Gabriel shared.

As Zoey was still studying when their financial crisis happened, she could only stand by Gabriel’s side and be a pillar of support. She didn’t think much of the situation, but knew instinctively that she had to help him because of love. From then on, their life took a turn and they started living on a budget.

Keeping to only $2.50 for every meal, they mostly ate chicken breast and rice as they needed to scrimp and save money ‒ buying ingredients like bacon that cost $4 was even considered luxurious back then.

Seeing how Zoey stayed with him despite being in bad shape, Gabriel knew that she was the one for him. After all, only those who truly love you would be willing to go through thick and thin.

Deciding to start their own business

The decision to start their own business was pretty much the only option Gabriel and Zoey had. If they opted for a standard 9 to 6 job, they would need to work at least for the next 20 to 30 years without spending a single penny in order to pay off the debt. With that in mind, they decided to pursue being entrepreneurs.

However, as not every parent is supportive when it comes to their child’s decision in life, it was difficult for Zoey’s parents to accept their business venture.

“My parents had expected me to pursue a degree after completing Polytechnic,” Zoey revealed. “That is the “safe” path that they wanted me to take in life.”

On the other hand, Gabriel’s father was pretty much supportive of his decision as long as it was something that he wanted to do. Eventually, Zoey and her parents came to a compromise ‒ she would return to school if things didn’t work out with Gabriel after a couple of years.

Although the businesses they initially attempted failed, Gabriel and Zoey soon learned that those were actually blessings in disguise. Gabriel realised what went wrong with their ventures and figured that he needed to learn about marketing on top of his experience in sales.

“I signed up for classes and even bought books to improve my knowledge,” Gabriel shared.

Soon enough, with the learnings he garnered, it occurred to Gabriel that he could actually offer marketing and consulting services to businesses and generate sales online. This later led to the couples’ decision to establish Ascend Marketing, their current company with over 20 employees.

How their business took flight

With a new goal and business idea in mind, Gabriel and Zoey reached out to a couple of friends who were good at business to pick up some tips and expand their connections. Gabriel also went the extra mile by actively meeting people whom he met on Facebook groups to seek business advice.

“There are actually a lot of businessmen who are willing to share about their success journey. All you have to do is reach out and ask them,” Gabriel revealed.

Those meet-ups proved useful as they eventually aided Ascent Marketing to gain traction. Gabriel and Zoey also worked perfectly as a team ‒ with Gabriel leading Ascend Marketing as the CEO, and Zoey overseeing operations by keeping employees and their businesses on track.

Thanks to Gabriel’s experience in sales, they also managed to secure clients and ads, and within the next 2 years, the company became profitable. Since then, the company has expanded to having a current headcount of 23, including international hires from Malaysia and the Philippines.

Juggling both business and their relationship

Gabriel and Zoey also ensure to squeeze in some gym time between their work schedule

Amidst their newfound success, Gabriel and Zoey inevitably started having their fair share of challenges in maintaining their relationship. In the first couple of years after establishing Ascend Marketing, they struggled to understand the boundaries between business and personal life.

“It took me some time to realise that when I speak to Zoey, I need to know if I’m speaking to her as a boss or as a husband,” Gabriel explained.

Zoey also admitted that they quarrelled often because of the blurred dynamics between them.

Fortunately, she later realised that things didn’t always have to be taken personally ‒ Gabriel was only giving feedback and speaking to her as a fellow worker. Nothing he said was actually targeting her as a person.

Instead of having a work-life balance, the couple also figured that work-life integration was the sweet spot they were looking for. We’re no stranger to the concept of work-life balance, but the latter term refers to blending both professional and personal matters rather than seeing them as different entities.

While Gabriel and Zoey would try to avoid work topics after clocking out, they couldn’t help but share with each other the business ideas they thought of over dinner because they simply enjoyed it.

By doing so, they get to apply what they learn in their business to their lives and vice versa. For example, they see some of their current employees like their children so from their working hours, they also learn how to take better care of their own daughter.

Apart from work-life integration, they also make a conscious effort in planning for their marriage, family, and business by scheduling events with their daughter, themselves, and each other. This way, they get to manage their priorities and even have time for some alone TLC.

“Thursday night is our date night so even if it’s just a simple meal at a hawker centre, we would make the effort to head outside,” Zoey shared.

A stable relationship doesn’t come without any hard work, and it is indeed inspiring to see how Gabriel and Zoey put in the constant effort as both business and life partners.

Future plans and tips for other business couples

Gabriel and Zoey might have been together for 10 years but it was only by working together that they managed to see each other in a new light. Over our chat, Zoey shared how she saw Gabriel grow over time and was surprised to see how he thinks in certain scenarios, which made her respect and love for him grow even more.

As for Gabriel, he felt the same because if not for the business, he wouldn’t have known and seen Zoey’s drive, determination, and courage.

When asked for advice to couples who plan to start their own business, Gabriel believes that they should “only do so if the relationship is very strong”. He saw couples in the past who eventually broke up because of the challenges they faced halfway through a business venture.

As for Zoey, she feels that a business can also be a reflection of the couple’s relationship, so it has to be good.

“They need to be aligned with the same values and have the same expectations before deciding to really start a business,” Zoey suggested.

Gabriel and Zoey hope that by sharing their story, they would inspire other couples and break the stereotypes about couples running a business together. Currently, they plan to expand their business by scaling a new software and looking to branch out internationally too.

Gabriel And Zoey’s Story Prove That Couples Can Do Business Together

Through Gabriel and Zoey’s story, they have shown us that it is never too late to start over again, even when you’ve lost almost everything. Their relationship also proves that true love doesn’t just exist, but can also motivate you to rise above and overcome obstacles together.

Migraine Facts

Compared to my girlfriends who consider themselves “seasoned migraineurs”, I’ve only experienced mild headaches that subside after a while. I never understood the debilitating pain that comes with migraines, but I’ve noticed they tend to happen to women much more often than men. Interesting.

To find out why, I spoke to Dr Tu Tian Ming, a neurologist from Neurology Care Partners at Mount Elizabeth Medical Centre, to learn the reason behind such observations, and how to better avoid migraines, so that you can also better avoid having searing pains without warning.

1. Migraines are different from headaches

For illustrative purposes only

Don’t be too quick to dismiss the pain in your head as simply headaches ‒ they might very well be migraines.

Unlike headaches, which feel like bands of tension around your forehead, migraines are neurological diseases that recur over time. Simply put, migraines originate from the brain, and the pain typically appears on one side.

Dr Tu explained that “migraines normally come with a throbbing sensation, as if your blood vessels are pulsating in your head.” Nausea is one of the main symptoms, and patients also feel overwhelmed and very disturbed by loud noises and light during an attack.

2. Hormones cause women to experience migraines more often than men

For illustrative purposes only

Let’s face it ‒ being a woman is rough. Besides suffering from monthly period cramps, women are more likely to experience migraines twice as often as men. Scientific evidence has shown that hormonal changes, particularly during the menstrual cycle, are known migraine triggers.

“Many of my patients come to me either pre-or post-menses, and they always ask me the reason behind it,” Dr Tu shared. “Unfortunately, the fluctuation of the estrogen and progesterone are the hormones that trigger the migraine.”

Interestingly, Dr Tu revealed that he also had female patients who stopped experiencing migraines when they were pregnant.

“When women are pregnant, their hormone levels become more stable. In fact, they have very high progesterone levels, and the estrogen decreases and remains stable throughout the pregnancy.”

3. Emotional and social stress contribute to migraines too

For illustrative purposes only

While hormones are a significant trigger for migraines, 80% of the occurrences are actually caused by emotional and social stress.

“Facing your boss, having an exam, and going for an interview are examples of emotional stress that people undergo,” Dr Tu said. “It could also be family, personal, and relationship issues.”

To help prevent migraines, patients can try to manage these triggers by staying calm and practicing meditation.

4. Seeking a specialist can help you better understand the cause of migraines

For illustrative purposes only

Admit it ‒ you’re one of those who prefer to wait out a health condition before actually seeking professional help. While this approach is common among migraine sufferers, Dr Tu recommends visiting a GP before seeking a specialist like himself.

“I think patients with any form of headaches should see a GP first because GPs are the first step for triage,” Dr Tu shared. “When GPs refer patients to specialists, it is because they don’t have the necessary tools or need a specialist’s input.”

If you’re wondering about the differences, specialists offer detailed diagnoses, and develop various solutions to alleviate migraines.

“I’d recommend that patients start a migraine diary and note their surroundings whenever an attack happens,” Dr Tu suggested. “This helps them to notice any patterns in their migraines, allowing us to identify triggers.”

That being said, treating migraines takes time and effort. It doesn’t end with just one visit, and you may need to return to the specialist for follow-up treatments.

5. Understanding and managing your triggers help lessen the frequency of migraines

For illustrative purposes only

Once you’ve identified your triggers for migraines with the help of a specialist, the next step is to adopt a healthy lifestyle that prevents them from occurring.

“I had a patient who was very sensitive to heat,” Dr Tu said. “But since she couldn’t escape from Singapore’s hot and humid weather, she tried her best to keep herself cool and hydrated. Her efforts eventually paid off, reducing her migraine attacks.”

For some patients, exercising helps relieve migraines, while others might find that having quiet time by themselves is a great way to lessen their frequency. Either way, you can choose to improve your health by incorporating new habits in your lifestyle.

6. Migraines reduce the quality of life when not treated

For illustrative purposes only

While migraines are not life-threatening, they reduce the quality of life when left untreated. They make it harder to focus on daily tasks, enjoy activities with our loved ones, and even rest. This once again highlights the importance of seeking professional help, and identifying the causes of migraines to eliminate any discomfort you may face.

7. There are medications to avoid migraines

For illustrative purposes only

Painkillers are familiar medications for migraine sufferers, but beyond these pills, other types of medicines relieve migraines, especially when women experience them during their monthly menstruation.

“CGRP (Calcitonin gene-related peptide) is a new class of medications recently introduced for migraine sufferers,” Dr. Tu shared. “These medications not only help prevent migraines from worsening, but also treat them after they have developed.”

“When other methods don’t work for a patient, we can look into prescribing short-term medications called mini prophylaxis, which prevents migraines from occurring during the menstrual cycle,” Dr Tu explained.

In most cases, patients barely experience side effects, and at most, they may feel a bit constipated or have a runny nose.

“The medicines do not affect the menstrual cycle at all, and are very safe to consume,” Dr Tu said.

8. 1 in 10 people suffer from migraines

For illustrative purposes only

Compared to medical issues like diabetes and heart attacks, migraines are not commonly identified as a “serious” health problem. However, you might be surprised to know that 1 out of 10 people suffer from migraines.

As such, Dr Tu believes that more can be done to raise awareness of migraines, especially in workplaces.

“I always encourage patients with migraines to have their family members come along for a consultation because I need to inform them that this condition is real,” Dr Tu said. “This way, they can understand what the patient is going through and how they can help as family members.”

At the same time, Dr Tu also shares the sentiment that many women tend to downplay their migraine symptoms just because they don’t wish to appear problematic. One way to address such issues is to raise awareness by educating people about migraines.

These Migraine Facts Show You Don’t Have To Suffer Alone

In today’s society, migraines are often brushed away as mere headaches, and there is a lack of empathy towards those who suffer from this medical condition. Through the aforementioned migraines facts, we hope that more people will become aware of the effects migraines can cause.
